Another glimpse of 19-year-old me

My old pal Sam Maronie, who took so many wonderful convention photos during the mid-’70s, many of which included me, just surprised me with yet another taken at the 1975 Mighty Marvel Comic Convention.

You’ve already seen the one of me and Moon Knight co-creator Don Perlin snapped during that same weekend. I don’t know whether this one was taken before or after that one over the March 22-24 1975 weekend, but it’s definitely a different day, because I’m wearing a different shirt and yet another hat loathed by my wife.

That’s bearded me in the back, looking down.

All of those around me — the ones I recognize, anyway — are long gone. That’s Len Wein to the far left, and Duffy Vohland looking back and up at him. On the far right are Michelle Brand and Marty Greim.

That long-haired guy with his thumb to his lips might be Doug Moench — but it might also just be yet another long-haired guy. There were a lot of us back then. I reached out to old friends who might remember young Doug better, and will update this post once I hear back.

I don’t recognize any of the others in the room. If you do, let me know.

Thanks, Sam, for letting me do some more time traveling!

Why I’m recommending you read Sam Maronie’s pop culture memoir

I normally don’t pitch my friends’ books here, because due to that friendship you probably wouldn’t trust me anyway, but since the last time Sam Maronie and I were together in the same place, this happened—

That shirt! That beard! That hat!

Sam Maronie continues to be my personal time machine. After turning up old cosplay photos of me bare-chested and wielding a broadsword, he’s now shared something far more horrifying.

I mean, would you take a look at that shirt!

I completely understand why Don Perlin, the artist for my Captain Midnight Action Book for Sports, Fitness & Nutrition, can be seen averting his eyes.

This pic is from the 1975 Mighty Marvel Comic Convention. I was 20 years old. Remind me to tell you sometime how a 20-year-old kid ended up in charge of programming and putting together the program book for Marvel’s first convention …

Three more ’70s cosplaying pics of a much younger me

I’ve shared photos of a much younger, costumed me before, but considering the recent brouhaha stirred up by Pat Broderick’s denunciation of cosplayers, which was followed by other comics pros, such as Marv Wolfman, supporting cosplay and offering their own costumed pics, I figured it was time to give you another glimpse of my broadsword and my bare chest.

Sam Maronie, who runs the always entertaining site Sam Maronie’s Entertainment Funhouse, took a ton of con pics in the old timey days, which is surprising, because I’d’ve thought my mug would have broken his camera. In any event, he recently sent along some images of me as a generic barbarian from the 1974 Creation Convention at New York’s Hotel Commodore. (more…)

Two more bare-chested cosplay pics from 1974

Sam Maronie, who recently sent me a photo I’d entirely forgotten of the only costume I ever wore to a con, has turned up two more. According to Sam, these were taken at the 1974 New York Creation Convention at the Hotel Commodore.

In the first pic, I’m dueling with fellow fan Dave Simons.

A heavily cropped version of this was published in F.O.O.M. back when I edited the magazine for Marvel. (more…)

In which I am bare-chested, carrying a broadsword … and threatening Joe Sinnott

Posted by: Scott    Tags:  comics, conventions, Joe Sinnott, Samuel Maronie    Posted date:  January 12, 2014  |  No comment

Remember how I told you I’d only worn a costume to a convention once?

I’m going to have to amend that statement. Samuel Maronie, old pal and proprietor of the pop-culture blog Sam Maronie’s Entertainment Funhouse, mentioned over on Facebook that he had a photo of me in costume threatening legendary Marvel Comics inker Joe Sinnott with a broadsword—a moment in time of which I have no memory!

The strangest thing about not remembering this encounter? When he sent me a copy of the pic, I saw that I’d signed the thing in 1993! Which makes two things I no longer remember.

In any case, feast your eyes on this …
