Posted by: Scott    Tags:  Eating the Fantastic, Hugo Awards    Posted date:  January 27, 2024  |  No comment

That time of year has rolled around again, and earlier today, the Glasgow Worldcon opened nominations for the Hugo Awards, the Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book, and the Astounding Award for Best New Writer. If you’re eligible to nominate, I hope you’ll take my 2023 short story publications into consideration — but I’d also like you to consider my Eating the Fantastic podcast in the category of Best Fancast.

For your 2020 Hugo Awards Best Fancast consideration: Eating the Fantastic

It’s getting to be that time again, so if you’re eligible to nominate for the 2020 Hugo Awards, I invite you to check out my 20120 short story publications — but please also consider Eating the Fantastic in the category of Best Fancast as well.

Once March rolled around, and I was no longer able to travel to conventions and record episodes in restaurants, the nature of Eating the Fantastic changed. Now the nibbling occurred, not face-to-face across a table, but with hundreds or thousands of miles between me and my guests.

As I attempted to recapture the year we were supposed to have rather than the year we were given, sometimes we baked, and sometimes ordered takeout, sharing pizza, Weiner schnitzel, pappardelle, brownies, scones and more. In this new world, food continued to do what food always does — relax us, loosen our tongues, turn strangers into friends and bring friends even closer.

Yesterday, CoNZealand opened nominations for the 2020 Hugo Awards. If you’re eligible to nominate this year, check out my my 2019 short story publications — but I’d ask that you please consider Eating the Fantastic in the category of Best Fancast as well.

During 2019, I invited you to eavesdrop on 41 guests across 27 episodes for 53+ hours of ear candy, attempting to replicate all the fun I’ve had since I attended my first convention at age 15 — and then started wandering off from those conventions for good meals with good friends. The only difference between then and now is — since February 2016, I’ve been inviting you to take a seat at the table and eavesdrop. (more…)

Worldcon 76 announced today that the 2019 Hugo Awards nominations are now open. If you happen to be a nominating member, may I humbly ask that you consider my Eating the Fantastic in the category of Best Fancast?

Last year, Eating the Fantastic brought you 29 episodes featuring 46 guests across more than 56 hours, my attempt to replicate all the fun I’ve had since I was 15 and began experiencing those culinary conventions away from the conventions when I’d wander off for good meals with good friends. With Eating the Fantastic, you get to pull up a chair to the table and eavesdrop! (more…)

Attention voting SFWA and HWA members: It’s that time of year again

A few days ago, the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America announced that the nominations period for the Nebula Awards had begun, and since all my 2016 short stories have now been published—and the recommendations period for the Bram Stoker Awards from the Horror Writers Association is ongoing as well—it’s time to gather info about my publications in one place so eligible voting members of those two organizations can take them into consideration.

First up, two science fiction tales—

“101 Things to Do Before You’re Downloaded”

YouHumanFrontCoverTeaser

This 5,850-word far future science fiction story appears in the anthology You, Human, edited by Michael Bailey for Dark Regions Press. With the Earth about to end for our descendants, there are still a few more things that need to get done before it’s all over …

[UPDATED November 27 to add video from Chessiecon, so you may now see and hear me read all four stories I published in 2016. Enjoy!]

In which the Sad Puppies prove to be more powerful than L. Ron Hubbard

Posted by: Scott    Tags:  Charles Platt, Hugo Awards, The Patchin Review, Worldcon    Posted date:  April 6, 2015  |  2 Comments

For those who weren’t around in 1983 … a history lesson. Because, as I’ve said before, science fiction’s culture wars have been with us always.

The Sad Puppies, who have successfully campaigned their slate onto the ballot, hope they can break the Hugo Awards in order to rebuild them—a sentiment which has, I’m afraid, a bit too much of a “we had to destroy the village in order to save it” ring for my comfort. But note this isn’t the first time such a concept has been put forward.

“If you too are unhappy with the Hugo system, it’s time to do your bit,” wrote Charles Platt in his editorial to the March-May issue of The Patchin Review. He didn’t put a full slate forward back then, just a single novel, written by … well … you can see the name of the author in a box at the bottom of the front cover.

PatchinReviewMarch1983

That’s right—L. Ron Hubbard, whose novel Battlefield Earth had been published in 1982. (more…)
