How to win a Buster Crabbe swimming pool from Charlton Comics

Step One: Go back in time to 1959 and pick up a copy of Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds #14.

Step Two: Drool over the prizes offered in the Charlton Giant Contest, especially the First Prize of a Buster Crabbe swimming pool—named after the Olympic gold medalist who later portrayed both Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers.

Step Three: Because you are from 2015, marvel that in the year 1959, the cash value of a huge in-ground pool was only $1,000.

Step Four: Come up with a name for the creature below and—

Argh! My eyes!

What is that nightmarish thing with the face of a pig, the ears of an elephant, and the clothing of Mr. Monopoly? Make it go away before its horrific visage is seared forever into my nightmares!

Brrrrrr!

That’s better.

To go on …

Step Five: Send in that name along with a brief 25 words or less explaining why you chose it, and if the editorial staff at Charlton judges you the best on “the basis of originality and neatness,” that pool could be yours!

So—who won this swimming pool “big enough to hold twenty people at one time”?

I have no idea! Nor, apparently, does the Internet, as Googling has revealed nothing.

Any Charlton Comics experts out there know the answer?

And while you’re at it—have you figured out yet who won the DC Comics Slogan Contest from 1956 I asked you about in 2009? That mystery has gone on far too long …

Name him: Charlie Marvel

I chose the name based on Charlton (Charlie) and Marvel comics. We are huge comic fans beginning with my dad who read the original comics in the 40’s and 50’s! We would love to swim in this pool!

Well, hop in that time machine, go back to 1959, and give it a shot! 😉 Good luck!
