1950 Clorox ad drawn by … Jim Mooney?

Posted by: Scott    Tags:  comics, Jim Mooney, old newspapers    Posted date:  October 5, 2011  |  6 Comments

The following ad appeared in the July 16, 1950 issue of The New York Times Sunday Magazine. My wife, whose discerning eyes I’d trust more than anyone’s when it comes to the styles of DC artists of the ’50s and ’60s, swears both images are by Jim Mooney.

Mooney, for those not familiar with the name, was best known for drawing Supergirl from 1959-1968, though I also loved him on Dial H for Hero. On top of that, I was lucky enough to have him draw my fill-in issue of Omega the Unknown in 1977.

Give the Clorox ad below a look and let me know wherther your discerning eyes agree.

Hi, Scott!

I was not aware that you had written this issue of Omega The Unknown. I remember the character of the Blockbuster being killed off in the July, 1977 issue of Omega The Unknown. I’m more familiar with your stint on Captain Mar-Vell.

Well, I didn’t kill him. I let him get away! And the Comics Code didn’t like it …

The way I can always tell Mooney’s hand in the art is by the eyes…lifeless, like dolls eyes…no, actually his eyes are the giveaway, big black pupils…and this ad doesn’t show enough eyes, close-up. Soooo….can’t confirm.

I read Omega The Unknown way back in the day and was disappointed to see it go. The collection is available on Comixology.com and I’ll be buying it soon so that I can reread the series.
