“And, Behold, It Was Very Good” went live on New Year’s Day 2022 in the Winter 2022 issue of Kaleidotrope.
It’s one of the few stories for which I can pinpoint the exact place and time a story popped into my head. I was hiking through the woods with my son, talking for some reason about the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, when I began riffing on that tree while doing a poor impression of Jerry Seinfeld, asking: “What’s this about the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil? What about all those other trees?” And after a few minutes, I realized there was a story there.
Though there’s a bit of humor to the story, it’s not at all the kind of humor you’d think from that genesis.
