{"id":9176,"date":"2013-01-27T20:46:17","date_gmt":"2013-01-28T01:46:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=9176"},"modified":"2013-01-27T20:48:06","modified_gmt":"2013-01-28T01:48:06","slug":"who-in-science-fiction-did-you-most-want-to-marry-and-murder-in-1991","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2013\/01\/27\/who-in-science-fiction-did-you-most-want-to-marry-and-murder-in-1991\/","title":{"rendered":"Which science fiction author did you most want to marry and murder in 1991?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the unexpected pleasures of last weekend&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/confusion.stilyagi.org\/\">Immortal ConFusion<\/a> was that someone had dumped several decades worth of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.locusmag.com\/\"><em>Locus<\/em><\/a> back issues on the freebie table, which meant I was able to dig though copies from the &#8217;80s and &#8217;90s and sit round with my friends who were there remarking about how much our absent friends had changed.<\/p>\n<p>One article that amused me contained the results of the annual <em>Locus<\/em> poll, and what made it especially amusing was that in 1991, the editors decided to be more playful than usual. In addition to being asked which novels, magazines, etc., we most liked, we were also asked, &#8220;Which author would you most like to meet, marry, publish or murder?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While the &#8220;meet&#8221; and &#8220;publish&#8221; results were mildly interesting, it&#8217;s the &#8220;marry&#8221; and &#8220;murder&#8221; answers that appeared in the September 1991 issue that were the most fun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/LocusSeptember1991.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9177\" alt=\"LocusSeptember1991\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/LocusSeptember1991-255x300.jpg\" width=\"255\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/LocusSeptember1991-255x300.jpg 255w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/LocusSeptember1991.jpg 790w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And the author <em>Locus<\/em> readers most wanted to marry 22 years ago was &#8230; <\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Kristine Kathryn Rusch!<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, she  led the 146 nominated authors &#8220;by a wide margin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The other finalists, in alphabetical order, were&#8212;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Isaac Asimov<br \/>\nDavid Brin<br \/>\nLouis McMaster Bujold<br \/>\nPat Cadigan<br \/>\nC. J. Cherryh<br \/>\nCharles de Lint<br \/>\nLisa Goldstein<br \/>\nStephen King<br \/>\nKathe Koja<br \/>\nEllen Kushner<br \/>\nTanith Lee<br \/>\nUrsula K. Le Guin<br \/>\nAnne Rice<br \/>\nJennifer Roberson<br \/>\nPamela Sargent<br \/>\nKate Wilhelm<br \/>\nConnie Willis<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When it came to the  author readers most wanted to murder, <em>Locus<\/em> played it coy, and did not name which of the 122 who&#8217;d made the list ended up in the lead, choosing only to reveal in alphabetical order the ten authors &#8220;with significant votes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The winners&#8212;if they can be called winners&#8212;were&#8212;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Piers Anthony<br \/>\nIsaac Asimov<br \/>\nOrson Scott Card<br \/>\nJack L. Chalker<br \/>\nStephen R. Donaldson<br \/>\nHarlan Ellison<br \/>\nL. Ron Hubbard<br \/>\nStephen King<br \/>\nJohn Norman<br \/>\nJerry Pournelle<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can be sure that during the con, whoever saw the article  made suggestions as to the 2013 candidates for such lists.
