{"id":8673,"date":"2012-12-05T21:50:56","date_gmt":"2012-12-06T02:50:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=8673"},"modified":"2012-12-05T21:50:56","modified_gmt":"2012-12-06T02:50:56","slug":"4-sound-bites-from-1972-planned-parenthood-irs-computers-air-pollution-and-the-godfather","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2012\/12\/05\/4-sound-bites-from-1972-planned-parenthood-irs-computers-air-pollution-and-the-godfather\/","title":{"rendered":"4 sound bites from 1972: Planned Parenthood, IRS computers, air pollution, and The Godfather"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After having shared with you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2012\/12\/03\/my-long-lost-brooklyn-accentfound\/\">two<\/a> self-serving <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2012\/12\/05\/can-you-help-me-find-these-four-high-school-students-from-1972\/\">snippets<\/a> from the April 2, 1972 episode of the Malachy McCourt radio show on which I was a guest, I feel I should present you with some excerpts that are a little more public-spirited\u2014so here are three commercials and a news report, all with an old timey feel that makes them of much more general interest.<\/p>\n<p>First up, an odd Planned Parenthood ad\u2014odd because, until the song which takes up most of the airtime finishes playing, I had no idea what the ad was even about.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F70150150?\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Next, a news report which attempts to put a scare into taxpayers by warning that computers were being used by the IRS to catch cheaters.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F70152772?\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Then, a call for volunteers&#8212;or &#8220;street organizers&#8221;&#8212;to help track air pollution on Manhattan&#8217;s Upper West Side.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F70153682?\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And finally, an ad for <em>The Godfather<\/em>, which had only opened two weeks earlier. This one&#8217;s interesting not just for the way the film is described, but because of how few New York theaters were playing the picture.
