But I&#8217;ve rented a car so I can head off on foodie expeditions, bringing along with me as many other <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">victims<\/span> volunteers as I can stuff in the car.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming, of course, that the coming Frankenstorm doesn&#8217;t mess with my plans.<\/p>\n<p>All six of these buzzworthy destinations are in Toronto, about a half an hour away from the hotel, and some have asked&#8212;how can I dare to  tread so far from the convention itself? Won&#8217;t I be missing out? Nope! When I go, with four or five others in the car, it&#8217;ll be like I&#8217;m taking the con <em>with<\/em> me!<\/p>\n<p>So &#8230; what&#8217;s on the menu?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday&#8217;s lunch: The Burger&#8217;s Priest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/TheBurgersPriest.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7739\" title=\"TheBurgersPriest\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/TheBurgersPriest-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/TheBurgersPriest-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/TheBurgersPriest.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I asked for advice on which Toronto burger joint was the best, the responses got so heated you&#8217;d think I was in a conversation about the presidential election. But a consensus soon formed around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theburgerspriest.com\/\">The Burger&#8217;s Priest<\/a>, which has a secret menu not posted at the restaurant. Which means you can only order something like The Vatican City\u2014&#8221;a double cheeseburger squeezed between two grilled cheese buns&#8221;\u2014if you find out about it online.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday&#8217;s dinner: The Black Hoof<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/BlackHoofBoneMarrow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7742\" title=\"BlackHoofBoneMarrow\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/BlackHoofBoneMarrow-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/BlackHoofBoneMarrow-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/BlackHoofBoneMarrow.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was the first restaurant on my Toronto wish list, because of its offal\u2014not awful\u2014reputation. Can&#8217;t wait to get a taste (along with a few daring friends) of <a href=\"http:\/\/theblackhoof.com\/\">The Black Hoof<\/a>&#8216;s smoked sweetbreads, roasted bone marrow, and spicy horse tartare. If you&#8217;re up for a late-night adventure with me (they&#8217;re open until 1:00 a.m., and I plan to head over at the end of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2012\/10\/12\/where-youll-find-me-during-next-months-world-fantasy-convention-in-toronto\/\"> my 9:00 p.m. panel<\/a>), give a shout.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Friday&#8217;s lunch: Lai Wah Heen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Lai-Wah-Heen-Lunch1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8141\" title=\"Lai-Wah-Heen-Lunch1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Lai-Wah-Heen-Lunch1-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Lai-Wah-Heen-Lunch1-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Lai-Wah-Heen-Lunch1.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.laiwahheen.com\/\">Lai Wah Heen<\/a> has a reputation for high-end dim sum. For example\u2014&#8221;Wonton of lamb loin flavored with cumin seeds &amp; garlic&#8221; and &#8220;Steamed dumpling of Australian Wagyu beef topped with thinly sliced Wagyu beef, in chili oil.&#8221; Definitely not your usual dim sum. In fact, one Yelp reviewer actually slammed the neighborhood of the World Fantasy Con hotel in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/lai-wah-heen-toronto#hrid:3L1JOkBt7Zz8OLoMHKXbOw\">his review<\/a>: &#8220;If your idea of dim sum is $2 steamers and old ladies yelling from carts, then go back to Richmond Hill.&#8221; And apparently, they even have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontolife.com\/daily\/daily-dish\/weekly-lunch-pick\/2010\/08\/09\/where-to-eat-lunch-this-week-lai-wah-heen\/\">durian cream pastries<\/a>! How could you go wrong?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Friday&#8217;s dinner: Barque<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/BarqueToronto.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8144\" title=\"BarqueToronto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/BarqueToronto-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/BarqueToronto-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/BarqueToronto.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Apparently, there&#8217;s no better BBQ in Toronto than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barque.ca\/\">Barque<\/a>. Need I say more?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saturday&#8217;s dinner: Momofuku Shoto<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MomofukuShoto.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8146\" title=\"MomofukuShoto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MomofukuShoto-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MomofukuShoto-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MomofukuShoto.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once I heard that David Chang had <em>just<\/em> opened a Toronto branch of his tasting menu restaurant <a href=\"http:\/\/momofuku.com\/toronto\/shoto\/\">Momofuku Shoto<\/a>, I was determined to get in. As with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2012\/09\/18\/next-alinea-the-aviary-and-the-greatest-amuse-bouche-the-universe-ever-gave-a-foodie\/\">Alinea and Next<\/a>, I had to watch the clock so I could jump on an online reservations system, checking in precisely at 10:00 a.m. exactly 13 days before the night I wanted. But for a chance to sit at the U-shaped table that wraps around the kitchen and watch the chefs at work, creating dishes such as <a href=\"http:\/\/gazeandgraze.com\/2012\/10\/21\/the-momofuku-shoto\/\">Spaghetti with nori, sardine and lumpfish roe<\/a>, it was worth it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sunday&#8217;s dinner: Cafe Boulud<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/CafeBouludFish.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8148\" title=\"CafeBouludFish\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/CafeBouludFish-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/CafeBouludFish-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/CafeBouludFish-1024x701.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/CafeBouludFish.jpg 1041w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chef Daniel Boulud <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dinemagazine.ca\/2012\/10\/where-to-dine-now-cafe-boulud\/\">just opened<\/a> his new Toronto restaurant <a href=\"http:\/\/danielnyc.com\/cafebouludTORONTO.html#intro\">Cafe Boulud<\/a>, and as with the new Momofuku Shoto, I want to see it while everything is still all shiny and new. The only question will be\u2014how will I decide between the &#8220;Country Terrine of Duck &amp; Foie Gras Black Fig, Pistachio, Spelt levain&#8221; and the &#8220;Roasted Veal Loin Cheeks and Sweet Breads, Oyster Mushrooms Carrot Confit, Garlic-Parmesan Grit?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fingers crossed that the weather cooperates with my planned pre-dawn flight Thursday, and I make it to all six of these foodie temples.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And when I write that I&#8217;ll be eating in Toronto during World Fantasy Con, I mean, yes, I&#8217;ll be eating in Toronto during World Fantasy Con &#8230; which though it bills itself as a Toronto convention, is actually off in Richmond Hill.
