And who am I to deny doing want the universe wants?<\/p>\n<p>First, while reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2012\/09\/07\/introducing-our-fall-issue\/\">the latest issue<\/a> of the <em>Paris Review<\/em>, I came across a collage the artist had done in 1956 that made use of comics\u2014and you already know how intrigued I am by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2009\/04\/13\/another-john-ashbery-comic-book-collage\/\">collages<\/a> like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2009\/04\/11\/can-you-recognize-this-face\/\">that<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Then (I assume because I wasn&#8217;t acting quickly enough), up popped <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/978-1-938221-00-2\">a <em>Publishers Weekly<\/em> review <\/a>of the book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jess-Tricky-Cad-Other-Jessoterica\/dp\/1938221001\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1347817841&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=jess+tricky+cad\"><em>Jess: O! Tricky Cad and Other Jessoterica<\/em><\/a>, which told me more about the former Manhattan Project radiochemist turned artist and informed me that the book&#8217;s &#8220;publication coincides with the beginning of a traveling exhibition of his work set for 2013 and 2014.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So I guess I&#8217;d better share the image which intrigued me so, or else mentions of Jess will inevitably start creeping into every magazine I read!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>And so, here&#8217;s the paste-up known as <em>Nance<\/em>\u2014or what I assume is only a <em>part<\/em> of the work, since The <em>Paris Review<\/em> describes <em>Nance<\/em> as a &#8220;collage on four two-page spreads.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/JessBurgessCollinsCollageNanceABirthdayGiftforJames.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7646\" title=\"JessBurgessCollinsCollageNanceABirthdayGiftforJames\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/JessBurgessCollinsCollageNanceABirthdayGiftforJames-300x124.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/JessBurgessCollinsCollageNanceABirthdayGiftforJames-300x124.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/JessBurgessCollinsCollageNanceABirthdayGiftforJames-1024x423.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll have to forgive the way the magazine&#8217;s spine splits the image down the middle\u2014that&#8217;s the only way I was able to scan it due to how it appears in the <em>Paris Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Nance<\/em> is part of the 1956 work,<em> A Birthday Pillow Book for James<\/em>, which Jess had made for poet and filmmaker James Broughton. But\u2014made out of what?<\/p>\n<p>At first I thought the figures had a Russ Manning feel to them, and perhaps came from <em>Tarzan<\/em>, but apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russ_Manning\">Manning only worked on the <em>Tarzan<\/em> newspaper strip<\/a> from 1969-1979, and besides, was Tarzan ever running around with what seem to be Native American Indians?<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s up to you to tell me\u2014which 1956 comic strip did Jess cut up to create <em>Nance<\/em>?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The universe must really want me to tell you about the collage artist born Burgess Franklin Collins, who became known as, simply, Jess.
