{"id":6806,"date":"2012-07-02T21:47:29","date_gmt":"2012-07-03T01:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=6806"},"modified":"2012-07-02T21:47:29","modified_gmt":"2012-07-03T01:47:29","slug":"so-by-how-much-more-did-the-world-end-up-loving-wally-wood-over-bernard-krigstein","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2012\/07\/02\/so-by-how-much-more-did-the-world-end-up-loving-wally-wood-over-bernard-krigstein\/","title":{"rendered":"So by how much more did the world end up loving Wally Wood over Bernard Krigstein?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2012\/06\/16\/is-the-world-forgetting-bernard-krigstein\/\">A few weeks ago<\/a>, I was bemoaning the fact that the world seemed to have forgotten EC Comics artist Bernard Krigstein, a thought brought about by two (then ongoing) Heritage original art auctions of complete comics adaptations of Ray Bradbury short stories. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMars is Heaven!\u201d illustrated  by Wally Wood was expected to bring in between $30,000 and $50,000, while  \u201cThe Flying Machine\u201d by Krigstein  was estimated to go for anywhere from $7,000 to $9,000. This imbalance seemed odd to me, not only because Krigstein was once held in such high regard, but also because Bradbury considered   \u201cThe Flying Machine\u201d to be &#8220;the single finest piece of art-drawing I\u2019ve seen in years.&#8221; Not that I have anything against Wally Wood, you understand, it&#8217;s just that until I saw those predictions, I&#8217;d assumed the two artists were held in equal regard.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the auctions are over, though, I&#8217;m feeling a little better about it all.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/MarsisHeavenSplashWallyWood.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/MarsisHeavenSplashWallyWood-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"MarsisHeavenSplashWallyWood\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/MarsisHeavenSplashWallyWood-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/MarsisHeavenSplashWallyWood-734x1024.jpg 734w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/MarsisHeavenSplashWallyWood.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/ECComicsKrigsteinSplash.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/ECComicsKrigsteinSplash-220x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"ECComicsKrigsteinSplash\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/ECComicsKrigsteinSplash-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/ECComicsKrigsteinSplash-751x1024.jpg 751w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/ECComicsKrigsteinSplash.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So how&#8217;d those auctions turn out?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMars is Heaven!\u201d sold for <a href=\"http:\/\/fineart.ha.com\/c\/item.zx?saleNo=5087&#038;lotNo=78092\">$54,687.50<\/a>, and \u201cThe Flying Machine\u201d  went for <a href=\"http:\/\/fineart.ha.com\/c\/item.zx?saleNo=5087&#038;lotNo=78060\">$27,500<\/a>.
