Less than an hour after putting out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2012\/05\/28\/please-help-me-dispel-a-marvel-comics-myth\/\">the call<\/a>, I had scans for all  the <em>Captain America<\/em> and <em>Black Panther<\/em> letters pages I wrote while at Marvel back in the &#8217;70s. <\/p>\n<p>So what will they reveal? Was there truly an orchestrated effort by us staffers, as some have claimed, to use the letters columns to sow seeds of dissatisfaction with Kirby among fandom?<\/p>\n<p>Since I assembled many of those columns, I thought it important to respond with the facts, because as far as I know, none of those making such claims have done more than repeatedly make the claim, without evidence. What does a look at the actual texts of six such pages I put together for Kirby-created comics actually reveal?<\/p>\n<p>(And a big thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/louchelarue\">Sean Howe<\/a>, author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Marvel-Comics-The-Untold-Story\/dp\/0061992100\">the upcoming history of Marvel in the &#8217;70s<\/a>, for responding so quickly!)<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s dig into <em>Captain America<\/em> 202, shall we?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica202LettersPage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6454\" title=\"CaptainAmerica202LettersPage\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica202LettersPage-204x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"204\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica202LettersPage-204x300.jpg 204w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica202LettersPage-697x1024.jpg 697w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica202LettersPage.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lots of positivity there, beginning with a letter that includes the line, &#8220;THIS is the Kirby I remember.&#8221; While the column does include is a letter hoping Kirby doesn&#8217;t do away with the characterization of the previous creative team, when <em>isn&#8217;t<\/em> there a letter like that whenever someone new is at the helm?<\/p>\n<p>Since the column for issue 203 was about all-important issue 200, I managed to squeeze in 13 letters. And the ratio?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica203LettersPage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6455\" title=\"CaptainAmerica203LettersPage\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica203LettersPage-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica203LettersPage-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica203LettersPage-695x1024.jpg 695w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica203LettersPage.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looks like 10 of the 13 were positive, including one that stated, &#8220;<em>Captain America<\/em> has become a fun mag again. Jack Kirby has the best understanding of what adventure comics are supposed to present.&#8221; Yeah, that&#8217;ll turn fandom against him!<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t know what was written by whichever staffer took care of the letters column for issue 204, but when I was back again for 205, I once more see a boatload of kudos for Jack, including, &#8220;I have to admit that it was one of the best stories I have ever read,&#8221; and &#8220;In my opinion, your work since returning to Marvel has been some of the best ever.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica205LettersPage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6456\" title=\"CaptainAmerica205LettersPage\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica205LettersPage-205x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica205LettersPage-205x300.jpg 205w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica205LettersPage-700x1024.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica205LettersPage.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Issue 206 is where it gets even more interesting, as it includes a letter that begins, &#8220;Since you don&#8217;t print any criticism about Jack, I know this letter won&#8217;t be printed &#8230; &#8221; <\/p>\n<p>If the letters columns were so filled with negativity, as some have claimed, how is it that the actual readers don&#8217;t think we&#8217;ll publish negative letters?<\/p>\n<p>And what did I write in response to the comments that Kirby&#8217;s scripting wasn&#8217;t up to snuff, and that all of Marveldom Assembled wanted Steve Englehart back?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica206LettersPage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6457\" title=\"CaptainAmerica206LettersPage\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica206LettersPage-205x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica206LettersPage-205x300.jpg 205w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica206LettersPage-700x1024.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica206LettersPage.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If anything runs counter to the theory of an anti-Kirby conspiracy, it&#8217;s my words on behalf of The King:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Do they, Jim? We don&#8217;t think so.<\/p>\n<p>As we&#8217;ve said before, the difference between Kirby and Englehart is basically one of style. They each have their individual visions as to who Cap is, and both of their Caps are different in character then the way he <em>originally<\/em> appeared. We could argue forever about their respective merits and maladies, but there is nothing we can say about the book that the King can&#8217;t say for himself in his work.<\/p>\n<p>We feel that most of our readers like Jack&#8217;s work, and whether we&#8217;re right, only time and sales will tell.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m glad I was able to respond that way, not letting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2011\/04\/21\/shame-on-you-captain-america\/\">my personal feelings about Kirby&#8217;s scripting<\/a> (which is what started this chain of posts) prevent me from doing my job as an Assistant Editor in the Marvel Bullpen.<\/p>\n<p>And how about the final <em>Captain America<\/em> column I pulled together?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica207LettersPage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6458\" title=\"CaptainAmerica207LettersPage\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica207LettersPage-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica207LettersPage-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica207LettersPage-687x1024.jpg 687w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/CaptainAmerica207LettersPage.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I followed a letter that complained about Kirby&#8217;s scripting with one that raved about him: &#8220;I&#8217;ve had it with this drivel demeaning the King&#8217;s writing abilities! Nobody at Marvel, not even Stan himself, has scripted so totally in consistency with Kirby art as Jack has! &#8230; Three cheers for, and long live, the King!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As for the lone <em>Black Panther<\/em> letters columns I wrote, it was early in Kirby&#8217;s run, so it was entirely filled with reader guesses as to which title  he&#8217;d be working on. Even so, I ended on a positive note: &#8220;Don&#8217;t forget to be here next issue, to learn what your fellow Merry Marchers thought of <em>Black Panther<\/em> #1! Did they love it? Did they cherish it? Did they introduce it to their parents? I just don&#8217;t see it. <\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;d like those who feel they <em>do<\/em> see it to back up their claims with some proof.
