{"id":5812,"date":"2009-08-15T22:25:22","date_gmt":"2009-08-16T02:25:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=5812"},"modified":"2024-12-18T22:28:16","modified_gmt":"2024-12-19T03:28:16","slug":"the-unseen-scarecrow-of-don-perlin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2009\/08\/15\/the-unseen-scarecrow-of-don-perlin\/","title":{"rendered":"The unseen Scarecrow of Don Perlin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While digging through boxes of papers earlier this month in search of Clarion workshop manuscripts from 1979 which had been scrawled on by my instructors\u2014needed for my Worldcon PowerPoint presentation &#8220;How to Respond to a Critique of Your Writing&#8221;\u2014I came across a box containing photocopies of several pieces of artwork I hadn&#8217;t even remembered owning.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll probably end up posting them all here eventually, but since I shared a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2009\/07\/06\/happy-59th-birthday-john-byrne\/\">a never-before seen drawing of the Scarecrow<\/a> on John Byrne&#8217;s birthday last month, I thought\u2014why not start off with a never-before-seen drawing of The Scarecrow by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Don_Perlin\">Don Perlin<\/a>, an artist best known for <em>Werewolf by Night<\/em>, a title which had impressed me way back when.<\/p>\n<p>According to the one page of script which was packed away with the photocopy, this was meant to be the splash page for <em>Scarecrow<\/em> #2, with room left at the top for one of Marvel&#8217;s introductory text paragraphs and at the bottom for the indicia.<\/p>\n<p>(And forgive me if the top and bottom halves of the illustration don&#8217;t entirely line up\u2014I don&#8217;t own  a  scanner large enough to fit the entire piece, and so scanned each half separately and put it all back together again with Photoshop.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/DonPerlinScarecrowSplash.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5813\" title=\"DonPerlinScarecrowSplash\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/DonPerlinScarecrowSplash-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/DonPerlinScarecrowSplash-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/DonPerlinScarecrowSplash.jpeg 792w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nBut (you may ask) whatever happened to <em>Scarecrow<\/em> #1?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>After  my first Scarecrow story appeared in <em>Dead of Night<\/em> #11 (dated August 1975), the character was immediately given his own bimonthly title.  But before the first issue could appear, Marvel underwent a great implosion, and the book was canceled before its own birth.  The story meant for the planned first issue was printed in <em>Marvel Spotlight<\/em> #26, so no second issue ever appeared.  I can&#8217;t even remember whether it was ever written or drawn.   As far as I know, this photocopy is all that exists of that second issue.<\/p>\n<p>And as for the lettering which appears above the title, my script indicates that it was to read as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the dead of the night,<br \/>\nBy the full of the moon,<br \/>\nThe evil that drives us<br \/>\nwill breath its last breath &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>For the chase with the hell-fiend<br \/>\nis won by the swift\u2014<br \/>\nHowever you look at him<br \/>\nthe SCARECROW SPELLS DEATH!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yeah, I know, it&#8217;s doggerel &#8230; but what do you want?
