{"id":5290,"date":"2012-01-25T19:42:58","date_gmt":"2012-01-26T00:42:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=5290"},"modified":"2012-01-25T19:42:58","modified_gmt":"2012-01-26T00:42:58","slug":"guess-which-superheroes-guest-starred-on-alcatraz-monday-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2012\/01\/25\/guess-which-superheroes-guest-starred-on-alcatraz-monday-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Guess which superheroes guest-starred on Alcatraz Monday night?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Comic books made an appearance on <em>Alcatraz<\/em> Monday night, and luckily, they weren&#8217;t as difficult to identity as the one that showed up on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2012\/01\/18\/can-you-identify-this-comic-book\/\">that 1975 episode of the <em>Mary Tyler Moore<\/em> show<\/a>. Jorge Garcia&#8217;s character,  Dr. Diego &#8220;Doc&#8221; Soto, owns a comic book store, so I assumed we&#8217;d see comics as stage dressing in the background, but in the latest episode, a couple of issues had starring roles.<\/p>\n<p>In the opening scene of the third episode, &#8220;Kit Nelson,&#8221; a child killer sneaks into a bedroom and spirits away one of two brothers &#8230; but not before we see what the kid must have fallen asleep reading.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/AlcatrazComic1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5291\" title=\"AlcatrazComic1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/AlcatrazComic1-300x166.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/AlcatrazComic1-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/AlcatrazComic1.jpg 619w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t quite make out the pictured hero or the logo, so at this point I had no idea whether this was a real-life comic or one supposedly  created by Garcia&#8217;s character, who in addition to owning the shop, also happens to be a writer and artist. But later on, after the kid is <strong>[spoiler alert!]<\/strong> rescued, Garcia visits him and brings along some comics to cheer him up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I saw you were missing 12, 27, and 35,&#8221; says Garcia, to which the kid replies, &#8220;No way! This is awesome!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And Garcia hands him this.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/AlcatrazComic2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5292\" title=\"AlcatrazComic2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/AlcatrazComic2-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/AlcatrazComic2-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/AlcatrazComic2.jpg 617w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aha! As much as I love that supergroup, I guess I don&#8217;t think of it as a one that would be a favorite of a little kid. I&#8217;ve always thought part of the appeal of the Justice Society was the  nostalgia factor, since they&#8217;re the heroes of a previous generation. But who knows? Maybe the kid just had more sophisticated tastes. (Or maybe that theory of mine is a bunch of hooey.)<\/p>\n<p>Think <em>Alcatraz<\/em> was trying to tell us anything by this choice of title? For now, I&#8217;ll assume it was a random pick.
