The latest episode of Eating the Fantastic wasn’t recorded at a convention, but as you’ll learn if you listen to my introduction, there’s a very good reason you could, if you’d care to, pretend it was.<\/p>\n

My guest this time around is Robert Greenberger<\/a>, a writer and editor of more than 100 books and anthologies, many within the DC, Marvel, and Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0franchises. He started his professional career an editor for\u00a0Comics Scene<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Starlog\u00a0Press, and in 1984, joined\u00a0DC Comics\u00a0as an assistant editor to\u00a0Len Wein\u00a0and\u00a0Marv Wolfman. He\u00a0was promoted to editor the following year, and assigned the titles\u00a0Star Trek<\/em>,\u00a0Suicide Squad<\/em>, and\u00a0Doom Patrol<\/em>. The\u00a0adaptations of several\u00a0Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0films he edited led to him working on\u00a0the franchise’s novel series, such as the\u00a0seven-book crossover miniseries\u00a0Gateways<\/em>, developed with novel\u00a0editor\u00a0John J. Ordover. He continued at DC until 2000, by which time he’d\u00a0risen to the position of Manager-Editorial Operations. Over the years, he worked on such titles as\u00a0The\u00a0Warlord<\/em>,\u00a0Lois Lane<\/em>,\u00a0Action Comics\u00a0Weekly<\/em>,\u00a0Time Masters<\/em>,\u00a0Secret Origins<\/em>,\u00a0The Hacker Files<\/em>, and more.\u2028\u2028<\/p>\n

In 2001, he joined\u00a0Marvel Comics\u00a0as Director-Publishing Operations under\u00a0Joe Quesada, but soon rejoined DC Comics as a Senior Editor for Collected Editions, where he remained until 2006. Since that time, he\u2019s freelanced as a writer and editor, working for such companies as\u00a0Weekly World News<\/em> (where he was Managing Editor in 2006 and 2007),\u00a0Platinum Studios,\u00a0Syfy,\u00a0Famous Monsters of Filmland<\/em>, and ComicMix.com.\u00a0He\u2019s also a co-founder of Crazy 8 Press.<\/p>\n

We discussed our teen experiences at the first Star Trek<\/em> convention in 1972, how TV taught him about the existence of Marvel Comics, the way George Reeves as Clark Kent made him want to be a journalist, the lecture Wonder Woman<\/em> editor Robert Kanigher gave him after he dared give feedback, why so many DC Comics staffers walked around without their shoes on Fridays, how he convinced Cable News to launch Comic Scene<\/em> magazine, the convoluted way Denny O’Neil was responsible for him becoming Len Wein and Marv Wolfman’s assistant, how his editing of Star Trek<\/em> comics led to his writing Star Trek<\/em> fiction, the differences he saw in corporate culture while working at both Marvel and DC, what Clark Kent would have thought of his gig at the Weekly World News<\/em>, and much more.<\/p>\n
