{"id":33744,"date":"2023-04-17T21:36:27","date_gmt":"2023-04-18T01:36:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=33744"},"modified":"2023-04-17T21:36:27","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T01:36:27","slug":"once-upon-a-time-in-comics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2023\/04\/17\/once-upon-a-time-in-comics\/","title":{"rendered":"Once upon a time &#8230; in comics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;ve followed me for any length of time, you know that whenever a comic book appears on screen in a movie or TV show set in the past, I&#8217;m immediately thrown out of the plot as I attempt to calculate whether the set decorator managed to get chronologically accurate comics.<\/p>\n<p>That happened again tonight with Quentin Tarantino&#8217;s <em>Once Upon a Time &#8230; in Hollywood<\/em>. The comics appear in a scene taking place February 8, 1969, which we know because we&#8217;re told that earlier in the day when we see Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio&#8217;s characters in Musso &#038; Frank.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/OnceUponaTimeDate.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/OnceUponaTimeDate-300x126.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"126\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-33746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/OnceUponaTimeDate-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/OnceUponaTimeDate-1024x430.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/OnceUponaTimeDate-768x322.png 768w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/OnceUponaTimeDate-1536x644.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/OnceUponaTimeDate-2048x859.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Later that same day, we get a quick upside down glimpse of a couple of comic books in the trailer of stuntman Cliff Booth (that&#8217;s Brad Pitt&#8217;s character). By freezing the frame, I was able to identify them as <em>Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandoes<\/em> #66 and <em>Kid Colt Outlaw<\/em> #134.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ComicsOnceUponaTime2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ComicsOnceUponaTime2-300x138.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"138\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-33747\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ComicsOnceUponaTime2-300x138.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ComicsOnceUponaTime2-1024x472.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ComicsOnceUponaTime2-768x354.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ComicsOnceUponaTime2-1536x708.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ComicsOnceUponaTime2-2048x944.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Kid Colt Outlaw<\/em> #134 is dated May 1967, and went on sale February 2, 1967, two years earlier. So &#8230; possible. But <em>Sgt. Fury<\/em> #66 is dated May 1969, and went on-sale May 4, 1969, about 3-1\/2 weeks after the scene. Probably not possible \u2014 but this pedant declares it a good attempt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ComicsOnceUponaTime.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ComicsOnceUponaTime-300x226.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-33748\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ComicsOnceUponaTime-300x226.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ComicsOnceUponaTime-768x579.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ComicsOnceUponaTime.jpeg 794w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not 100% sure the <em>Kid Colt<\/em> comic would have survived two years in a trailer with that ginormous pit bull \u2014 or that Cliff Booth would have hung onto a comic book that long even if it had. But I&#8217;ll allow it.
