And now it’s time to take a seat at the table for brunch with writer Michael Jan Friedman<\/a>. We met up last month during Shore Leave<\/a>, and headed off to the nearby Ashland Cafe<\/a>, where we ate out on the patio. Luckily, it was a nice day for it, but even if it hadn\u2019t been quite that nice, we\u2019d still have chosen to remain outside in this time of COVID. We\u2019re definitely not out of the woods yet, folks. <\/p>\n

Michael’s written more than 70 books — around half of them set in the\u00a0Star Trek<\/em> universe.\u00a0In 1992, he wrote\u00a0Reunion<\/em>, the first\u00a0Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em> hardcover, which introduced the\u00a0crew of the Stargazer<\/em>, Captain Jean-Luc Picard\u2019s first command.\u00a0Friedman has also written for the\u00a0Aliens<\/em>, Predator<\/em>, Wolf Man<\/em>, Lois and Clark<\/em>, DC Super Hero, Marvel Super\u00a0Hero, and Wishbone<\/em>\u00a0licensed book universes. Eleven of his books, including\u00a0Hollywood Hulk Hogan<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Ghost Hunting<\/em>\u00a0(written with Syfy\u2019s Ghost Hunters<\/em>), have appeared on the New York Times bestseller list. He’s also produced more than\u00a0200 comic book stories, including the\u00a0Darkstars<\/em>\u00a0series from DC Comics, which he created with artist Larry Stroman, and\u00a0the\u00a0Outlaws<\/em>\u00a0limited series, which he created with artist Luke McDonnell. He also co-wrote the story for the second-season\u00a0Star Trek: Voyager<\/em> episode \u201cResistance,\u201d which guest-starred Joel Grey.<\/p>\n

We discussed the comic book he refused to trade for Fantastic Four<\/em> #1 as a kid, how the X-Men might actually be a deconstructed Superman, whether it mattered the Marvel Universe was set in New York rather than DC’s series of fictional cities, why his two favorite superheroes are Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter, the lesson he took from an early encounter with Isaac Asimov, how he easily solved a stardate conflict which allowed him to keep Chekov in one of his Star Trek novels, what it was like helping Hulk Hogan write his autobiography, and much more.<\/p>\n
