I also came across this even older coin commemorating Chicago&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haymarket_affair\">Haymarket Massacre<\/a>, a token I would <em>not<\/em> want a curious TSA agent to find mixed in with my change as I went through security.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, the front of the coin, which was apparently struck in 1887 on the one-year anniversary of the event, seems innocent enough.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Haymarket1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2695\" title=\"Haymarket1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Haymarket1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Haymarket1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Haymarket1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The reverse, on the other hand, might raise a few eyebrows.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Haymarket2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2696\" title=\"Haymarket2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Haymarket2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Haymarket2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Haymarket2.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, there&#8217;s an image of an exploding bomb\u2014or is that Earth itself blowing up?\u2014along with the words &#8220;ANARCHIST BOMB EXPLODED MAY 4, 86.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A fascinating piece of history. But there are times and places it doesn&#8217;t pay to attempt to give someone a history lesson.<\/p>\n<p>The only info I can find online about the coin is at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagohistory.org\/dramas\/act3\/courtOfPublicOpinion\/souvenir_f.htm\">Chicago Historical Society<\/a>, which doesn&#8217;t really tell me any more about its creation than I can figure out from the thing itself. It even states that &#8220;The circumstances behind the design and manufacture of this commemorative token in the Chicago Historical Society&#8217;s collection are unknown.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If anyone out there has additional information, please let me know.
