Following up on my conversations in  San Jose, California  with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2018\/09\/21\/binge-on-sushi-with-award-winning-author-pat-cadigan-in-episode-77-of-eating-the-fantastic\/\">Pat Cadigan<\/a> while binging on sushi and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2018\/10\/05\/nibble-naan-with-k-tempest-bradford-in-episode-78-of-eating-the-fantastic\/\">K. Tempest Bradford<\/a> over lamb roganjosh comes lunch with <a href=\"https:\/\/rebeccaroanhorse.com\">Rebecca Roanhorse<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zonarosasj.com\">Zona Rosa<\/a> Mexican restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>Roanhorse&#8217;s short story &#8220;Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience (TM),&#8221; which appeared in <em>Apex<\/em> magazine, won the Nebula Award earlier this year, and was also nominated for this year\u2019s Hugo Award, an amazing feat for a writer&#8217;s first published short story. Plus she was also  nominated for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. And the following night after she and I dined, she was the <em>winner<\/em> in both of those categories. (By the way, she was the first writer since 1980 to win the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the Campbell Award for Best New Writer the same year.  It\u2019s only been done once before, by Barry B. Longyear with his novella &#8220;Enemy Mine.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Roanhorse\u2019s  debut novel, <em>Trail of Lightning<\/em>, was published this summer by Saga Press, about which the <em>New York Times<\/em> had this to say: &#8220;Someone please cancel <em>Supernatural<\/em> already and give us at least five seasons of this badass indigenous monster-hunter and her silver-tongued sidekick.&#8221; It\u2019s the first book is <em>The Sixth World<\/em> series, and will be followed next year by <em>Storm of Locusts<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/RebeccaRoanhorseEatingtheFantastic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/RebeccaRoanhorseEatingtheFantastic-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-25352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/RebeccaRoanhorseEatingtheFantastic-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/RebeccaRoanhorseEatingtheFantastic-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/RebeccaRoanhorseEatingtheFantastic-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/RebeccaRoanhorseEatingtheFantastic-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We discussed the spark without which her award-winning short story would never have been written, the differing reactions her tale garnered from inside and outside of the Native American community, the compelling reason she chose to write it in the second person, what she learned as a lawyer that helped in writing her first novel, how she upped her game when she decided to be a writer for real, why she fell out of the reading habit and how a Laurell K.
