{"id":24419,"date":"2017-11-18T20:33:34","date_gmt":"2017-11-19T01:33:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=24419"},"modified":"2017-11-18T20:49:52","modified_gmt":"2017-11-19T01:49:52","slug":"attention-voting-hwa-and-sfwa-members-yes-its-that-most-wonderful-time-of-the-year-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2017\/11\/18\/attention-voting-hwa-and-sfwa-members-yes-its-that-most-wonderful-time-of-the-year-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Attention voting HWA and SFWA members: Yes, it\u2019s that most wonderful time of the year again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since the Science Fiction &#038; Fantasy Writers of America recently announced the start of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfwa.org\/forum\/ballots\">nominations<\/a> period for the Nebula Awards&#8212;and the <a href=\"http:\/\/horror.org\/subhub\/index.php?sid=85752\">recommendations<\/a> period for the Bram Stoker Awards from the Horror Writers Association is ongoing&#8212;plus all of my 2017 short stories have now been published&#8212;well, it&#8217;s that time of year again. <\/p>\n<p>Since all the cool kids seem to be doing it, I&#8217;ve assembled info about this year&#8217;s publications  in one place so eligible voting members of both organizations can take them into consideration.<\/p>\n<p>And so &#8230; <\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>First up, three science fiction tales&#8212;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u201cAfter the Harvest, Before the Fall&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/AnalogJanuaryFebruary2017.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/AnalogJanuaryFebruary2017-209x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-22857\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/AnalogJanuaryFebruary2017-209x300.jpeg 209w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/AnalogJanuaryFebruary2017-768x1102.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/AnalogJanuaryFebruary2017-713x1024.jpeg 713w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/AnalogJanuaryFebruary2017.jpeg 1748w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was the story that broke <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2016\/02\/01\/never-give-up-never-surrender-my-44-year-quest-to-sell-a-short-story-to-analog\/\">my 44-year dry spell<\/a> with <em>Analog<\/em>. It&#8217;s an 11,600-word novelette described by the magazine as &#8220;people born to die struggling to live.&#8221; It takes place in a future in which the rich and powerful get to order new bodies whenever they wish, and the religion those who are harvested have created to deal with their oppression.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;Pity This Busy Monster Not&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/AdamsLadderCover2017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/AdamsLadderCover2017-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-24389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/AdamsLadderCover2017-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/AdamsLadderCover2017-768x1061.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/AdamsLadderCover2017-741x1024.jpg 741w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/AdamsLadderCover2017.jpg 995w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This 6,425-word far-future short story was published in <em>Adam&#8217;s Ladder<\/em>, an anthology edited by Darren Speegle and Michael Bailey. After Val&#8217;s uncle dies, he makes a startling discovery in the basement, one which changes the world for the better. Not <em>his<\/em> world, however &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I read the first half of that story earlier this year at Balticon, which you can witness right here.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZIr1Ha75CJU?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>I also published two horror novelettes&#8212;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;Only Humans Can Lie&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;Faking It Until Forever Comes&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/LiarsFakersbyScottEdelman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/LiarsFakersbyScottEdelman-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"186\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-22194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/LiarsFakersbyScottEdelman-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/LiarsFakersbyScottEdelman.jpg 596w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These two zombie novelettes, coming in at 13,750 and 13,200 words respectively, were published together in a mini-collection from Written Backwards under the title  <em>Liars, Fakers, and the Dead Who Eat Them<\/em>. The back cover of the volume describes the book like so&#8212;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Vegan chef believes meat is murder. A determined waitress longs for stardom. He hopes to convince the world to abandon killing animals. She hopes to convince a director to make her a star. Both of those hopes are challenged when a zombie apocalypse traps them in small towns where their dreams might come true\u2014or else be crushed under the weight of an invading undead horde. Join Tim and Shelley as they struggle to survive\u2014and retain their sanity\u2014in a world where death suddenly holds no dominion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Though the book as a whole is too short to be nominated in the HWA&#8217;s Superior Achievement in a Collection category, the individual novelettes are eligible in the Superior Achievement in Long Fiction category.<\/p>\n<p>Listen as I read the opening sections from one of the two novelettes at Readercon earlier this year.  <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-2lRJ-kobQw?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>And finally, my lone fantasy story of the year&#8212;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8220;One of the Lucky Ones&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/SpaceandTime116.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/SpaceandTime116-231x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6069\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/SpaceandTime116-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/SpaceandTime116.jpg 603w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This 5,425-word contemporary fantasy appeared in the Spring 2017 issue of <em>Space and Time<\/em>, an astonishing 35 years after my first publication there. In it, after a man makes a serendipitous stop in a used bookshop and comes across a stack of old <em>New Yorker<\/em> magazines, he begins to uncover the secret history of his own life.  <\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>And that&#8217;s it for 2017!
