{"id":2404,"date":"2011-03-30T20:16:59","date_gmt":"2011-03-31T00:16:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=2404"},"modified":"2011-03-30T20:16:59","modified_gmt":"2011-03-31T00:16:59","slug":"solved-the-mystery-of-those-four-paul-levitz-rejects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2011\/03\/30\/solved-the-mystery-of-those-four-paul-levitz-rejects\/","title":{"rendered":"Solved: The mystery of those four Paul Levitz rejects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Remember those <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2011\/03\/15\/paul-levitz-rejects-me-again-and-again-and-again\/\">four late-&#8217;70s rejection notes<\/a> I shared that  were written to me by DC editor Paul Levitz for stories I&#8217;d submitted to  the company&#8217;s horror books such as <em>House of Mystery<\/em> and <em>House of Secrets<\/em>? At the time, I said I had no memory of which four plots had been rejected, and no way of finding out.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out I was wrong. Because all I had to do was turn those notes over, which I discovered by accident.<\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, I happened to glance toward a far corner of my desk, and noticed some scribbled blue pencil marks on a small sheet of paper. When I picked up the page and looked at it, I realized\u2014this was one of the rejects face down, and what I&#8217;d scrawled was  the name of the story being rejected.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what I discovered.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2216\" title=\"PaulLevitzReject2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject2-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject2-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject2-684x1024.jpg 684w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject2.jpg 793w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The story that Paul described as &#8220;too light-hearted&#8221; was called &#8220;Gingerbread Witch,&#8221; and I&#8217;m fairly confident that I eventually sold my concept to the TV series  <em>Tales from the Darkside<\/em> as the episode titled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/television\/bakers-dozen\/\">Baker&#8217;s Dozen<\/a>.&#8221;  Though somewhere along the way it became much less light-hearted.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  size-medium wp-image-2218\" title=\"PaulLevitzReject4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject4-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject4-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject4-685x1024.jpg 685w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject4.jpg 799w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I speculated earlier that  the cancer story Paul didn&#8217;t run might have been what was eventually turned into my short story &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/writing\/short-fiction\/the-man-who-would-be-vampire\/\">The Man Who Would Be Vampire<\/a>,&#8221; and I was correct, as that&#8217;s exactly what I wrote on the back in blue pencil.<\/p>\n<p>As for the other two rejected stories, nothing ever came of them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2217\" title=\"PaulLevitzReject3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject3-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject3-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject3-678x1024.jpg 678w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject3.jpg 789w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2215\" title=\"PaulLevitzReject1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject1-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject1-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject1-680x1024.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/PaulLevitzReject1.jpg 797w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The plot that would &#8220;cause legal problems&#8221; was for the tale &#8220;Video Vengeance,&#8221;  while the &#8220;in-joke industry&#8221; story was to be called &#8220;A Ghastly Tale,&#8221; and any  fan of EC Comics will be able to guess just what the in-joke was there.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d tell you more about those, but I&#8217;ll leave that for another day, because\u2014guess what? I still have the two unused typewritten plots, and plan to share them here eventually so you can see what form my <em>House of Mystery<\/em> submissions took in the late &#8217;70s and early &#8217;80s.
