{"id":2392,"date":"2011-03-29T21:58:12","date_gmt":"2011-03-30T01:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=2392"},"modified":"2011-03-29T21:58:12","modified_gmt":"2011-03-30T01:58:12","slug":"what-will-come-after-chosen-to-appear-in-best-new-horror-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2011\/03\/29\/what-will-come-after-chosen-to-appear-in-best-new-horror-22\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;What Will Come After&#8221; chosen to appear in Best New Horror #22"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My birthday isn&#8217;t until Thursday, but I got my best possible present two days early, in the form of an email this morning from Steve Jones, letting me know that my story &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/writing\/short-fiction\/what-will-come-after\/\">What Will Come After<\/a>,&#8221; which appeared for the first time in my zombie collection called, well, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/writing\/books\/what-will-come-after\/\"><em>What Will Come After<\/em><\/a>, had been chosen to appear in <em>The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror<\/em> #22. <\/p>\n<p>And what&#8217;s more, Steve had decided to open the book with it!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/c32385.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-470\" title=\"WhatWillComeAfter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/c32385-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/c32385-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/c32385.jpg 316w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This will mark my third appearance in one of Steve&#8217;s <em>Best New Horror<\/em> anthologies, and it occurs to me that all of my reprint sales to him were originally published in somewhat unusual sources, that is, not in traditional magazines or anthologies.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Steve&#8217;s first pickup, &#8220;The Suicide Artist,&#8221; originally appeared in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/writing\/short-fiction\/the-suicide-artist-the-kindest-cut\/\"><em>Suicide Art<\/em><\/a>, a small chapbook published by Necronomicon Press, and was reprinted in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/miscellaneous\/best-new-horror-4-1993\/\"><em>Best New Horror<\/em> #4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The next story he chose, &#8220;A Plague on Both Your Houses,&#8221; didn&#8217;t begin with any sort of professional publication at all, but was instead distributed as a Halloween card to 250 or so of my friends, after which Steve picked it for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/writing\/short-fiction\/a-plague-on-both-your-houses\/\"><em>Best New Horror<\/em> #8<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And now comes &#8220;What Will Come After,&#8221; a story written as an inducement so that readers already familiar with all my other zombie tales would still have a reason to pick up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pspublishing.co.uk\/books\/ps-publishing\/what-will-come-after-by-scott-edelman\">my PS Publishing collection<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So connecting the dots of those three reprint sales, what does it all mean? For one thing, that a story, no matter how humble its beginning, can get a chance at new life before a new audience.
