{"id":23212,"date":"2017-03-12T16:08:18","date_gmt":"2017-03-12T20:08:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=23212"},"modified":"2017-06-06T09:20:45","modified_gmt":"2017-06-06T13:20:45","slug":"episode-31-1995-whc-flashback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2017\/03\/12\/episode-31-1995-whc-flashback\/","title":{"rendered":"Eating the Fantastic Episode 31: Join Adam-Troy Castro and me for pizza at the mall in a 1995 World Horror Con flashback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Twenty-two years ago this very weekend, I was in Atlanta attending the 1995 World Horror Convention, where&#8212;without realizing it&#8212;I recorded what would eventually become Episode 31 of Eating the Fantastic.<\/p>\n<p>Who knew?<\/p>\n<p>You can thank Dave Slusher for that. <\/p>\n<p>In 1995, Dave was the host of a national radio talk show of the fantastic titled Reality Break, which launched in 1992 on WREK 91.1 FM in Atlanta. Dave  chronicled the World Horror Convention that year, stealing Adam and me away from the con venue&#8212;the Sheraton Colony Square Hotel&#8212;to the food court of the Colony Square Mall next door. And since food was involved&#8212;especially Adam\u2019s pizza, about which we seemed to joke a lot&#8212;it seemed especially serendipitous to revisit that day in this episode of Eating the Fantastic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/eatingthefantastic\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/PatreonDonationButton-300x68.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"68\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-23670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/PatreonDonationButton-300x68.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/PatreonDonationButton-768x175.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/PatreonDonationButton.jpg 816w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back in 1995, I was a couple of years into editing <em>Science Fiction Age<\/em> magazine, and my 13 years at the SyFy Channel&#8212;as well as this podcast&#8212;were still far in the future. And as for Adam, though he had published his first short story collection, plus the first story in the first issue of <em>Science Fiction Age<\/em>, his Andrea Cort novels, his Gustav Gloom series, and his 100 more short stories were still to come.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/HolderCastroHirschEdelman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/HolderCastroHirschEdelman-256x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/HolderCastroHirschEdelman-256x300.jpg 256w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/HolderCastroHirschEdelman.jpg 493w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note that this is <em>not<\/em> a photo of  Adam and me (along with Nancy Holder and Connie Hirsch) at that year&#8217;s World Horror Con. However, as it <em>is<\/em> a photo of us from a World Horror Con three years earlier, we&#8217;ll let it stand.
