{"id":21645,"date":"2016-03-12T16:19:08","date_gmt":"2016-03-12T21:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=21645"},"modified":"2016-03-12T18:39:57","modified_gmt":"2016-03-12T23:39:57","slug":"can-you-help-id-these-comics-panels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2016\/03\/12\/can-you-help-id-these-comics-panels\/","title":{"rendered":"Can you help ID these comics panels?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\"><em>Paris Review<\/em><\/a>&#8212;to which I&#8217;ve had a lifetime subscription since the late &#8217;70s&#8212;has provided me with yet another comics-related mystery. Over the years, they&#8217;ve published many collages which have used comics imagery, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2009\/04\/11\/can-you-recognize-this-face\/\">this one<\/a>, by poet John Ashbery,  which incorporated  one of the most famous faces of all and so was immediately identifiable by me, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2012\/09\/16\/another-comic-strip-mystery\/\">this<\/a>, by an artist  known as Jess, for which I needed help tracking down the original source.<\/p>\n<p>In the current Spring 2016 issue, to accompany an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6441\/the-art-of-nonfiction-no-9-luc-sante\">interview with Luc Sante<\/a>, the magazine published a flyer the writer had created in 1980 promoting a gig by the band the Del-Byzanteens. Do you?<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong> Well, that was fast!<\/p>\n<p>Sean Howe, author of the wonderful <em>Marvel Comics: The Untold Story<\/em> as well as the upcoming <em>Agents of Chaos<\/em> (about the founder of <em>High Times<\/em>) reached out directly  to Sante&#8212;because Sean knows <em>everyone<\/em>&#8212;and was told:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>They&#8217;re from a stack of promotional offprints I found when I was working at the Strand, aimed at newspapers and syndicates, for a strip called &#8220;Drift Marlo,&#8221; by Tom Cooke. Never having seen the strip anywhere else, I&#8217;d always assumed it had gone nowhere, but I was wrong &#8230; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sante also provided a link to <a href=\"http:\/\/allthingsger.blogspot.com\/2013\/01\/whats-cookin-thursday-story-strip-day.html\">an entry on Ger Apeldoorn&#8217;s blog<\/a> which included some of the strips from which Sante created his flyer.
