Lend your funny books to Dad so he&#8217;ll stop worrying about World War II!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So I was searching for comic books which contained references to ukuleles&#8212;as one does&#8212;and came across <a href=\"http:\/\/comicbookplus.com\/?dlid=22098\"><em>Blue Ribbon Comics<\/em> #2<\/a>, which has a cover date of December 1939. A one-pager titled &#8220;Strange But True&#8221; featured the following fact.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/BlueRibbonComics21939Ukulele.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21584\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/BlueRibbonComics21939Ukulele-246x300.jpg\" alt=\"BlueRibbonComics21939Ukulele\" width=\"246\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21584\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/BlueRibbonComics21939Ukulele-246x300.jpg 246w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/BlueRibbonComics21939Ukulele.jpg 452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 246px) 100vw, 246px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d have reproduced the whole  of the page, but unfortunately, one of the accompanying  strange facts was head-slappingly racist, so I don&#8217;t feel I should spread it around. (Though those who&#8217;d like to see how clueless folks were back in 1939 can go to <a href=\"http:\/\/comicbookplus.com\/?dlid=22098\">the scan of that issue<\/a> and click through to page 34.)<\/p>\n<p>But what I found more fascinating about the issue was an editorial  which advised  that since &#8220;Dad may seem a bit worried at times recently&#8221; because of things like &#8220;war and poor markets and slow business,&#8221; the kids who were the presumed readers   should leave it around where  Dad could find the comic so he&#8217;d then read it and cheer up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/BlueRibbonComics21939.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21583\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/BlueRibbonComics21939-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"BlueRibbonComics21939\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21583\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/BlueRibbonComics21939-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/BlueRibbonComics21939.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s right, in a message  which likely would have  gone to press in September or October of 1939&#8212;almost immediately after World War II began on September 1 of that year&#8212;kids were being told comics could help Dad get over it.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow, I doubt the adventures of Rang-a-Tang the Wonder Dog and Buck Stacey, Range Detective were going to be enough to take Dad&#8217;s mind off what at the time surely seemed like the beginning of the end of world &#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So I was searching for comic books which contained references to ukuleles&#8212;as one does&#8212;and came across Blue Ribbon Comics #2, which has a cover date of December 1939.
