{"id":21210,"date":"2015-12-27T21:54:32","date_gmt":"2015-12-28T02:54:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=21210"},"modified":"2015-12-27T22:12:48","modified_gmt":"2015-12-28T03:12:48","slug":"in-which-a-go-go-girl-is-told-shes-too-fat-to-frug-or-is-she","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2015\/12\/27\/in-which-a-go-go-girl-is-told-shes-too-fat-to-frug-or-is-she\/","title":{"rendered":"In which a go-go girl is told she&#8217;s &#8220;Too Fat to Frug&#8221; (or is she?)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve got yet another romance comic  to share with you that deals with a woman whose size  is judged by society to be less than acceptable, and this time around we finally enter the &#8217;60s &#8230; while at the same time offering what turns out to be my favorite single panel from any story of this type.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to play catch-up before diving in, check out &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2014\/12\/25\/so-what-about-the-ending-of-was-i-too-fat-to-be-loved\/\">Was I Too Fat to Be Loved?<\/a>&#8221; (June 1949), &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2014\/12\/21\/so-what-did-i-think-of-the-ending-to-the-comic-book-romance-too-fat-for-love\/\">Too Fat for Love<\/a>\u201d (Winter 1950), &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2015\/02\/05\/a-truly-nasty-romance-comic-warns-fat-girls-theyll-be-lonely-and-unwanted\/\">I Was a Fat Girl<\/a>&#8221; (February 1951), and a second  &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2015\/01\/14\/can-hollywoods-funny-fat-girl-find-true-love\/\">Too Fat for Love<\/a>&#8221; (March 1952), which I present in chronological order of publication so you can follow the changing times, rather than the order in which I found and shared them with you.<\/p>\n<p>Completists might also want to check out a few other comics which, though not romances, offer a lesson on the subliminal and not-so-subliminal messages being sent to readers, such as  <em>My Little Margie<\/em>&#8216;s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2015\/03\/08\/shes-just-like-oh-my\/\">Chubby, But Oh My!<\/a>\u201d (Dec 1957), and two stories from the pages of <em>Brenda Starr<\/em>, in which the reporter\u2019s cousin Abretha Breez, who in January 1949 is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2015\/03\/22\/meet-brenda-starrs-cousin-abretha-breez\/\">mocked<\/a> for not being able to fit into a kitchen to get cake, in  July 1949 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2015\/04\/24\/abretha-breez-is-back\/\">gets a boyfriend<\/a> who appears to appreciate her the just way she is.<\/p>\n<p>But on to the new!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Too Fat to Frug,&#8221; from the January 1967 issue of <a href=\"http:\/\/comicbookplus.com\/?dlid=58780\"><em>Love Diary<\/em> #47<\/a>,  was written by Gary Friedrich&#8212;who would shortly thereafter  write Marvel&#8217;s  <em>Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos<\/em> and go on to co-create <em>Ghost Rider<\/em>&#8212;and reportedly drawn by Tony Tallarico. I&#8217;m as uncertain as are the reference sites as to whether this is truly by Tallarico, as to my eye it looks little like the work of his with which I&#8217;m most familiar from the pages of  <em>Creepy<\/em> and <em>Eerie<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21213\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug1-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"TooFattoFrug1\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug1-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug1-768x1147.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug1-685x1024.jpg 685w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug1.jpg 907w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this 8-page story which leads off the issue, go-go girl Sharon Carr is the top dancer at The Bird Cage. And she immediately falls hard for the club&#8217;s new singer Bus Wayne. One thing&#8217;s for sure&#8212;it probably wasn&#8217;t because of  his lyrics!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21214\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug2-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"TooFattoFrug2\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug2-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug2.jpg 448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bus asks Sharon out immediately after his first gig there, and later that night, after <em>one kiss<\/em> &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug3.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21215\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug3-300x286.jpg\" alt=\"TooFattoFrug3\" width=\"300\" height=\"286\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug3-300x286.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug3.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, <em>that<\/em> was fast.<\/p>\n<p>After just a  few weeks, Sharon is sure Bus is about to propose, but before the words can slip out of his mouth,  new dancer Sheila Gordon arrives &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug4.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21216\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug4-300x291.jpg\" alt=\"TooFattoFrug4\" width=\"300\" height=\"291\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug4-300x291.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug4.jpg 448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and Bus becomes so discombobulated by Sharon&#8217;s wink (at least I think that&#8217;s a wink) and Southern accent that he completely forgets what he was about to say. <\/p>\n<p>So of course Sharon does <em>this<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug5.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21217\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug5-300x295.jpg\" alt=\"TooFattoFrug5\" width=\"300\" height=\"295\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug5-300x295.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug5.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That slap sends Sharon into an immediate downward spiral of binging, which we know because of the  obligatory scene of her  sitting alone while eating a sundae.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug6.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21218\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug6-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"TooFattoFrug6\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug6-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug6.jpg 438w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not only does this eventually lead to her  getting fired, because &#8220;I guess I&#8217;ve finally become too fat for the job,&#8221; but her continued eating progresses until she becomes &#8220;engulfed in great rolls of fat tissue.&#8221; Because Sharon begins to &#8220;miss admiring stares when I walked down the street,&#8221;  she&#8217;s driven to seek out professional help, but alas, it&#8217;s too late.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Well, here&#8217;s why, in the most nonsensical panel I&#8217;ve seen in stories of this type,  as a doctor tells her that &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug7.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21219\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug7-300x293.jpg\" alt=\"TooFattoFrug7\" width=\"300\" height=\"293\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug7-300x293.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug7.jpg 452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t you just hate it when glands get disturbed?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s only then that Sharon decides she was a fool to be so jealous over her boyfriend&#8217;s momentary distraction, and heads back to apologize. But it is, of course, too late, for Bus has already married Sheila, a realization which causes Sharon to wander the streets in tears.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug8.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21220\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug8-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"TooFattoFrug8\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug8-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug8-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug8.jpg 452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With nowhere else to go, Sharon tortures herself by  returning to The Bird Cage, where she stays to the shadows, weeping as she watches Bus sing and Sheila dance. But luckily, in the story&#8217;s last three panels, happiness awaits. Because admirer Ron Lowes, who admits he, too, is &#8220;a little on the heavy side,&#8221; asks the former go-go dancer to &#8230; well &#8230; dance &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug9.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21221\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug9-300x294.jpg\" alt=\"TooFattoFrug9\" width=\"300\" height=\"294\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug9-300x294.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug9.jpg 454w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and she does, albeit reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug10.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21222\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug10-298x300.jpg\" alt=\"TooFattoFrug10\" width=\"298\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug10-298x300.jpg 298w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug10-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TooFattoFrug10.jpg 447w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But once Sharon begins to move the way she used to, she realizes that as long as she can still dance&#8212;and dance with &#8220;a guy like Ron to care&#8221;&#8212;she has everything she needs.<\/p>\n<p>And the moral of the story is&#8212;a far better one than I expected going in, based on the usually flawed morals of stories past.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, Sharon loses her job as a go-go girl, but except for her employer, no one is shown to judge her for her size.
