{"id":21147,"date":"2015-12-15T16:07:04","date_gmt":"2015-12-15T21:07:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=21147"},"modified":"2015-12-15T16:07:04","modified_gmt":"2015-12-15T21:07:04","slug":"how-fans-first-found-out-about-the-scarecrow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2015\/12\/15\/how-fans-first-found-out-about-the-scarecrow\/","title":{"rendered":"How fans first found out about The Scarecrow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve shared a number of firsts about the Scarecrow since I started blogging, such as who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2015\/04\/18\/in-which-a-trip-to-hells-kitchen-reveals-who-was-supposed-to-draw-the-scarecrow-first\/\">the first artist<\/a>  was supposed to be, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2009\/12\/26\/the-scarecrow-that-never-was\/\">the first (and perhaps the last) Marvel subscription ad<\/a> featuring the character&#8217;s never-published stand-alone book, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2009\/08\/15\/the-unseen-scarecrow-of-don-perlin\/\">Don Perlin&#8217;s first page<\/a> to what was supposed to be <em>Scarecrow<\/em> #2.<\/p>\n<p>And as I skimmed further through that 1974 issue of <em>The Comic Reader<\/em> which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2015\/12\/10\/the-comics-company-that-promised-to-change-the-look-of-the-industry\/\">I told you about last week<\/a>, I came upon another first&#8212;the first time fans would have found out such a character even existed.<\/p>\n<p>In the Marvel News section, which included a blurb that &#8220;a <em>Spider-Man<\/em> live action film and a new TV series are being planned&#8221; (for which we&#8217;d all have to wait, as that TV show wouldn&#8217;t air until 1978, while a film wouldn&#8217;t  hit theaters for another 28 years), readers wound find this item.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TheComicReader109Scarecrow.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21149\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TheComicReader109Scarecrow-300x88.jpeg\" alt=\"TheComicReader109Scarecrow\" width=\"300\" height=\"88\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TheComicReader109Scarecrow-300x88.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TheComicReader109Scarecrow.jpeg 726w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve no idea when the August issue of <em>The Comic Reader<\/em> would have gone to press, but as I started on staff at Marvel on June 24 of that year, I obviously wasn&#8217;t there that long before then-editor Len Wein leapt on my idea &#8230; even though my name is never mentioned in that announcement.<\/p>\n<p>And as those familiar with the history of the Scarecrow already know, it never did appear in the pages of <em>Monsters Unleashed<\/em>, nor in its next announced location, as a backup in <em>Giant-Size Werewolf by Night<\/em>, but instead ended up debuting in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/comic-books\/dead-of-night-11-august-1975\/\">Dead of Night #11<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That wasn&#8217;t the only fascinating thing I found in this issue  of <em>The Comic Reader<\/em>. Check out this curious factoid about Marvel&#8217;s <em>Planet of the Apes<\/em> series.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TheComicReader109PlanetoftheApes.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21150\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TheComicReader109PlanetoftheApes-300x118.jpeg\" alt=\"TheComicReader109PlanetoftheApes\" width=\"300\" height=\"118\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TheComicReader109PlanetoftheApes-300x118.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/TheComicReader109PlanetoftheApes.jpeg 690w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And now we know why <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2010\/02\/26\/the-harmony-factor-syndrome-beneath-wakanda-by-dnald-f-mxgrmlin\/\">Don McGregor<\/a> never got that assignment.<\/p>\n<p><em>ba-dum ching!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(I kid, Don, I kid!
