And that&#8217;s the way it was with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capclave.org\/capclave\/capclave15\/\">Capclave<\/a>, which was just held in Gaithersburg, Maryland. I took part in four panels&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2015\/09\/24\/where-youll-be-able-to-find-me-during-this-years-capclave\/\">three to which I&#8217;d previously been assigned<\/a> plus one I was added to at the last minute to replace a panelist who couldn&#8217;t make it.<\/p>\n<p>I enjoyed sharing what wisdom I could on such panels as  &#8220;Building Your Audience&#8221;&#8212;which ended with me invalidating all the advice I&#8217;d given during the previous hour when I quoted William Goldman&#8217;s maxim that &#8220;Nobody knows anything&#8221;&#8212;and &#8220;Food In Fiction&#8221;&#8212;during which I explained  why <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2015\/04\/07\/celebrating-my-birthday-with-dinner-at-noma-the-worlds-1-restaurant\/\">Rene Redzepi<\/a> uses ants in his New Nordic cuisine. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/CapclaveTiptreeBarbaraKrasnoff.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/CapclaveTiptreeBarbaraKrasnoff-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"CapclaveTiptreeBarbaraKrasnoff\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-20685\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/CapclaveTiptreeBarbaraKrasnoff-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/CapclaveTiptreeBarbaraKrasnoff.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While I found all of that to be fun&#8212;you know me, put a microphone in front of me and I won&#8217;t shut up&#8212;the most important panel was probably the &#8220;Tiptree Retrospective,&#8221; which was captured above in a photo taken by Barbara Krasnoff. That&#8217;s Jim Freund, Julia Rios, Sarah Pinsker, me, and David Hartwell (who&#8217;d been Alice Sheldon&#8217;s editor and had actually visited her at home) reminiscing about that great writer in this, the year in which she would have turned 100.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The takeaway from that panel? READ MORE TIPTREE! And why not right now? How about &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/Love Is the Plan the Plan Is Death\">Love Is the Plan the Plan Is Death<\/a>&#8221; or &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lightspeedmagazine.com\/fiction\/and-i-awoke-and-found-me-here-on-the-cold-hills-side\/\">And I Awoke and Found Me Here on the Cold Hill\u2019s Side<\/a>&#8221; or &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ida.liu.se\/~tompe44\/lsff-book\/tiptree21.html\">The Women Men Don&#8217;t See<\/a>&#8221; (my favorite of all her stories) to start? <\/p>\n<p>Another thing I enjoyed doing was welcoming any con member who wore a FIRST CAPCLAVE ribbon. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2013\/09\/05\/one-small-thing-we-can-each-do-to-make-worldcon-better\/\">As I&#8217;ve said before<\/a>, this is the kind of thing I believe each of us must do to make conventions better.<\/p>\n<p>But enough about my official Capclave&#8212;how about my unofficial one?<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday night, I went&#8212;as I&#8217;ve done each of the previous two Capclaves&#8212;to the Bryan Voltaggio restaurant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voltrange.com\">Range<\/a>. Last year, that resulted in devouring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2014\/10\/16\/pig-face\/\">an 18-hour sous vide pig face<\/a>. Yes, that was me (holding one of the rolls from the bread basket below) as we began dinner at Range.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/RangeBreadBasket.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/RangeBreadBasket-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"RangeBreadBasket\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-20693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/RangeBreadBasket-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/RangeBreadBasket-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/RangeBreadBasket-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I won&#8217;t share everything we ate, as I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2013\/02\/26\/a-return-to-bryan-voltaggios-range\/\">shown you<\/a> so <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2012\/12\/16\/our-pre-opening-preview-night-dinner-at-bryan-voltaggios-range\/\">many<\/a> of them <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2013\/10\/13\/yet-another-magical-meal-at-range\/\">before<\/a>, but there were a few dishes that cry out for special attention &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; starting with the scallops and cauliflower, curry, almond, and caraway. Massive, tender, and scrumptious!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/RangeScallops2015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/RangeScallops2015-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"RangeScallops2015\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-20694\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/RangeScallops2015-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/RangeScallops2015-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/RangeScallops2015-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the star of the night was the barbecued saddle of rabbit plus Serrano ham stuffed with mushroom and glazed with an apple barbecue pur\u00e9e, a surprise dish whipped up by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MattieMcGhee\">Mattie McGhee<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RomeoZangari\">Romeo Tivoli<\/a>. So we hopped back in my Jeep and headed north, some to late-night panels, some to the bar, me to the party for the<a href=\"http:\/\/neworleansin2018.org\/wp2018\/\"> New Orleans in 2018<\/a> Worldcon bid.<\/p>\n<p>I hung out as long as I could and still drive safely home that night, and then, as I headed west, my head filled with new ideas, my heart filled with friends, and my belly filled with food, I could only think &#8230; life is good.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whenever I attend a convention, there&#8217;s always the official con, and then the con away from the con, which typically involves at least one great meal.
