{"id":20566,"date":"2015-09-12T14:15:18","date_gmt":"2015-09-12T18:15:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=20566"},"modified":"2015-09-12T14:15:18","modified_gmt":"2015-09-12T18:15:18","slug":"nyah-nyah-cult-of-kalumaithe-scarecrow-painting-belongs-to-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2015\/09\/12\/nyah-nyah-cult-of-kalumaithe-scarecrow-painting-belongs-to-me\/","title":{"rendered":"Nyah, nyah, Cult of Kalumai&#8212;the Scarecrow painting belongs to ME!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While being interviewed the other day by Shaun Clancy about Captain Marvel for an article which will appear in an upcoming issue of <em>Back Issue<\/em> magazine, I got to talking  about my first published comic book&#8212;which also happened to be the first appearance of Marvel&#8217;s Scarecrow. And when Shaun mentioned in passing that the character came out of a painting, right, I told him that, yes, he did, and I <em>have<\/em> that painting.<\/p>\n<p>Which may leave you thinking &#8230; <em>huh?<\/em> But the painting from the story wasn&#8217;t real &#8230; <em>was it?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you ever read the initial Scarecrow story in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/comic-books\/dead-of-night-11-august-1975\/\"><em>Dead of Night<\/em> #11<\/a>, you&#8217;d have seen that painting as the fifth  page of story by artist Rico Rival, which is first an action scene and later an object being auctioned.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/ScarecrowFullSplashPage.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/ScarecrowFullSplashPage-211x300.jpeg\" alt=\"ScarecrowFullSplashPage\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-20573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/ScarecrowFullSplashPage-211x300.jpeg 211w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/ScarecrowFullSplashPage-719x1024.jpeg 719w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/ScarecrowFullSplashPage.jpeg 1895w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But what you never saw, unless you were working beside me in the Marvel Bullpen back in the &#8217;70s, was  the original art for that page.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/ScarecrowSplashPage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/ScarecrowSplashPage-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"ScarecrowSplashPage\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-20567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/ScarecrowSplashPage-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/ScarecrowSplashPage-721x1024.jpg 721w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you look closely at the credits bar along the bottom of the page, you&#8217;ll note that both Rico Rival&#8217;s first name and Glynis Wein&#8217;s  full name were corrected. I&#8217;d love to tell you why, but nothing bleeds through when I hold the page against a bright light, and I won&#8217;t be peeling up the corrections themselves to find out.<\/p>\n<p>But about the painting these pieces of art inspired &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2011\/03\/31\/duffy-vohland-wishes-me-a-happy-birthday\/\">Duffy Vohland<\/a>, without whom I&#8217;d neither have worked in comics nor met my wife-to-be,  commissioned  a painting of the Scarecrow from Paty Cockrum.
