{"id":20376,"date":"2015-08-19T10:47:06","date_gmt":"2015-08-19T14:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=20376"},"modified":"2015-08-19T10:47:06","modified_gmt":"2015-08-19T14:47:06","slug":"a-giddy-visit-to-john-riggs-robot-hut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2015\/08\/19\/a-giddy-visit-to-john-riggs-robot-hut\/","title":{"rendered":"A giddy visit to John Rigg&#8217;s Robot Hut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sasquan.org\">Sasquan<\/a> begins today here in Spokane, and normally I wouldn&#8217;t have bothered showing up until last night, but I arrived Sunday instead, because I had things to do (some of which I can&#8217;t tell you about  until my deeds are revealed by others first) and people to see. <\/p>\n<p>Well, not only people. Also &#8230; robots.<\/p>\n<p>Because a 50-minute drive outside Spokane, in beautiful Elk, Washington, there exists <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robothut.robotnut.com\">the incomparable Robot Hut<\/a>, at which I spent several hours Tuesday afternoon. While there, I was so gobsmacked it was difficult to do more than say &#8220;Wow!&#8221; over and over and over again.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s the Robot Hut? <em>This<\/em> is the Robot Hut!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/JohnRiggRobotHut.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/JohnRiggRobotHut-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"JohnRiggRobotHut\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-20377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/JohnRiggRobotHut-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/JohnRiggRobotHut-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/JohnRiggRobotHut-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s John Rigg, a man who&#8217;s assembled what is (as far as I know) the  world&#8217;s largest collection of robots and robot memorabilia. Some he&#8217;s bought, others he&#8217;s traded for, and many he&#8217;s built himself.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I was truly overwhelmed. Weeks, even!<\/p>\n<p>While the Robot Hut is open to public, it doesn&#8217;t keep regular hours, as Rigg would rather spend his time building new robots than give tours to the random tourist  who might  have no true love for them. I was grateful he was able to squeeze me in  during one of the few days I was in town. Many of my favorite robots, plus the Time Machine from the George Pal movie of the same name.<\/p>\n<p>Not visible in that picture? Inside my heart, a 12-year-old boy was squeeing.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and about that Time Machine? Remember the episode of <em>The Big Bang Theory<\/em> which featured one? In addition to creating perfect reproductions of the classics,  Rigg also comes up with his own creations, as with a robot band which has a repertoire of around 100 songs.
