During this year’s Nebula Awards weekend in Chicago, I allowed a (how shall I put it?) indiscreet<\/em> photo of myself to be taken, and have been waiting since early June for it to appear online. Now that is has<\/a>, some background seems to be in order.<\/p>\n

It all began when Steven Silver<\/a> approached attendees and asked them to pose with a towel to promote WindyCon 42<\/a>. Why a towel? Those of you familiar with The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy<\/em> already know the importance of towels to science fiction. (The rest of you should head over here<\/a>.) <\/p>\n

So I held up the towel, smiled, let what was probably quite a mundane photo be taken, and figured that was that.<\/p>\n

Until later on during the weekend when I saw Mary Robinette Kowal<\/a> posing like this<\/em> …<\/p>\n

Well, not exactly<\/em> like that, as I was behind<\/em> Mary, and so privy to the truth of the illusion she was presenting to the camera. (Yes, illusion. Sorry to spoil your fantasies, folks!)<\/p>\n

I took Mary’s pose as a challenge, and so began stripping down … well, unbuttoning my shirt and pulling it off my shoulders, that is. Which resulted in this image, which once seen, cannot be unseen.<\/p>\n

And if those two photos don’t make you want to attend WindyCon 42<\/a> later this year, I don’t know what else I can do for you.<\/p>\n

That being said, the only question remaining is … who wore it best?<\/p>\n
