{"id":19672,"date":"2015-06-10T10:16:49","date_gmt":"2015-06-10T14:16:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=19672"},"modified":"2015-06-10T10:29:16","modified_gmt":"2015-06-10T14:29:16","slug":"a-trip-to-barcelona-for-tapas-at-next","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2015\/06\/10\/a-trip-to-barcelona-for-tapas-at-next\/","title":{"rendered":"A trip to Barcelona for Tapas at Next"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Up until Sunday, I&#8217;d been to <a href=\"https:\/\/website.nextrestaurant.com\">Next<\/a>&#8212;the restaurant that reinvents itself three times each year&#8212;six times for five different menus&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2012\/09\/18\/next-alinea-the-aviary-and-the-greatest-amuse-bouche-the-universe-ever-gave-a-foodie\/\">Sicily<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2012\/12\/16\/faith-is-good-but-knowledge-is-better-a-few-word-on-nexts-kyoto-menu\/\">Kyoto<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2013\/05\/24\/so-how-was-the-hunt-at-next-well\/\">The Hunt<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2013\/06\/02\/my-vegan-meal-at-next-was-so-good-im-going-to-have-to-eat-it-twice\/\">Vegan<\/a> (twice!), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2013\/06\/02\/my-vegan-meal-at-next-was-so-good-im-going-to-have-to-eat-it-twice\/\">Bocuse d&#8217;Or<\/a>. For a variety of reasons, I had to miss out on Next&#8217;s 2014 cuisines, but once it was announced that the Nebula Awards would be held in Chicago this year, I knew I&#8217;d have a chance to go back, and was thrilled.<\/p>\n<p>It will give you a sense of my priorities that the first thing I&#8217;ve decided to share with you (well, after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2015\/06\/08\/i-am-groot\/\">my acceptance speech as Groot<\/a>) is the weekend&#8217;s dinner at Next, for which the cuisine was Tapas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NextTapasPostcard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NextTapasPostcard-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"NextTapasPostcard\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-19675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NextTapasPostcard-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NextTapasPostcard-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NextTapasPostcard-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once I was seated at our table with my three dining companions&#8212;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Kate_Baker\">Kate Baker<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/glorioushubris\">Eugene Fischer<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/barrygoldblatt\">Barry Goldblatt<\/a>&#8212;the first thing I noticed was a postcard, supposedly sent from Barcelona, because  the chefs had travelled to Spain for inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>Also on the table were three varieties of cocas&#8212;a type of flatbread&#8212;which we found difficult to resist nibbling on before our server could describe them. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>(And forgive me if the photos that follow are a bit dark. The light levels were low in the restaurant, and I&#8217;m not one to disturb the other diners with a flash.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Cocas (flatbreads):<br \/>\nAnchoas y aceitunas (anchovies and olives),<br \/>\ntomate con coliflor p\u00farpura y queso de cabra<br \/>\n(purple cauliflower with tomato and goat cheese) and<br \/>\nhongos y cebolla (mushrooms and onions)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NextTapasCocas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NextTapasCocas-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"NextTapasCocas\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-19676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NextTapasCocas-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NextTapasCocas-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NextTapasCocas-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hard to pick a favorite, though perhaps the hongos y cebolla knocked me back the most. cleared, the next two dishes also arrived as a pair.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Cebollas a la parrilla (grilled onions)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a serving tile was set a charred piece of tree trunk, on top of which were what appeared to be chunks of burnt wood, which turned out to instead be &#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Cerdo y romesco (charred pork belly and croutons with romesco sauce)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/NextTapasPorkBelly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
