{"id":19372,"date":"2015-05-04T17:49:52","date_gmt":"2015-05-04T21:49:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=19372"},"modified":"2015-05-04T17:49:52","modified_gmt":"2015-05-04T21:49:52","slug":"how-im-doing-on-my-two-year-fitbit-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2015\/05\/04\/how-im-doing-on-my-two-year-fitbit-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"How I&#8217;m doing on my two-year Fitbit anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s May 4th, which makes it <em>Star Wars<\/em> Day, but what&#8217;s uppermost in my mind isn&#8217;t that&#8212;instead I&#8217;ve been thinking about how this marks the second anniversary of the day I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2013\/05\/07\/am-i-doomed\/\">strapped a Fitbit Flex to my wrist<\/a>. I&#8217;ve worn the exercise tracker continually 24\/7 since then, except for when I&#8217;ve been recharging or forced to remove the device while passing through airport security.<\/p>\n<p>I took note of where I stood on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2014\/05\/04\/how-im-doing-on-my-one-year-fitbit-anniversary\/\">my one-year Fitbit anniversary<\/a>, so I&#8217;ve been wondering what year two was going to look like. As it turns out, it ended up looking a <em>lot<\/em> like year one.<\/p>\n<p>The first year, thanks to the gamification of my walking, I took 4,078,838 steps, which came out to 2,030.89 miles.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the second year is over, I see I&#8217;m up at a total  8,186,353 steps and  4,076.00 miles. Which means that during year two, I took 4,107,515 steps and walked 2045.11 miles&#8212;which is nearly identical to year one!<\/p>\n<p>The difference, however, is in the details.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Though I earned fewer 5000- and 10,000-step badges last year, I earned more of the higher-level ones, even earning ones I&#8217;d never earned before, as this comparison of the first and second years shows.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>5,000-step badges: 359\/351 (710)<\/p>\n<p>10,000-step badges: 301\/274 (575)<\/p>\n<p>15,000-step badges: 49\/51 (100)<\/p>\n<p>20,000-step badges: 10\/16 (26)<\/p>\n<p>25,000-step badges: 3\/4 (7)<\/p>\n<p>30,000-step badges: 0\/1 (1)<\/p>\n<p>35,000-step badges: 0\/1 (1)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My second year also broke my first-year record for the best day ever.<\/p>\n<p>My first year&#8217;s best day was April 4, 2014, the day before <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2014\/04\/14\/another-successful-thank-god-its-spring-daffodil-party\/\">our annual daffodil party<\/a>, when I walked 28,398 steps, covering 14.15 miles.<\/p>\n<p>My second year&#8217;s best day was October 18, 2014, spent wandering Manhattan, when I walked 35,283  steps, covering 17.56 miles.<\/p>\n<p>No idea what year three will bring, but I&#8217;m looking forward to breaking both of those records. <\/p>\n<p>My Fitbit Flex has been very good at keeping me far less sedentary than I used to be without it, and if I want to stick around to write all those stories I&#8217;ve got bouncing around my brain, I <em>must<\/em> keep walking.<\/p>\n<p>Join me?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s May 4th, which makes it Star Wars Day, but what&#8217;s uppermost in my mind isn&#8217;t that&#8212;instead I&#8217;ve been thinking about how this marks the second anniversary of the day I strapped a Fitbit Flex to my wrist.
