{"id":19020,"date":"2015-03-24T20:40:00","date_gmt":"2015-03-25T00:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=19020"},"modified":"2015-03-24T20:47:52","modified_gmt":"2015-03-25T00:47:52","slug":"read-the-first-editorial-from-the-first-science-fiction-magazine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2015\/03\/24\/read-the-first-editorial-from-the-first-science-fiction-magazine\/","title":{"rendered":"Read the first editorial from the first science fiction magazine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I sure I must have read  <a href=\"http:\/\/comicbookplus.com\/?dlid=36697\">the April 1926 <em>Amazing Stories<\/em><\/a> before as part of my desire to see how this thing of ours began, but I have no memory of reading Hugo Gernsback&#8217;s editorial  in that first issue of the first science fiction magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Wait, no&#8212;let me correct that. Because Gernsback didn&#8217;t call it a science fiction magazine. He called it a <em>scientifiction<\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n<p>And what was scientifiction? For those who&#8217;ve never heard the term, let Gernsback explain&#8212;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>By &#8220;scientifiction&#8221; I mean the Jules Verne, H. G.
