{"id":18562,"date":"2010-11-05T23:01:12","date_gmt":"2010-11-06T03:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=18562"},"modified":"2015-02-03T16:54:06","modified_gmt":"2015-02-03T21:54:06","slug":"milton-caniff-praises-james-thurber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2010\/11\/05\/milton-caniff-praises-james-thurber\/","title":{"rendered":"Milton Caniff Praises James Thurber"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While attending the World Fantasy Convention in Columbus last weekend, in addition to escaping the hotel to hit all three restaurants spotlighted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2010\/10\/19\/where-youll-find-me-at-world-fantasy-con-2010\/\">Adam Richman of Man v. Food<\/a>, I also snuck away to visit the James Thurber house.  I&#8217;m afraid I didn&#8217;t really feel Thurber&#8217;s presence there&#8212;I might as well have been visiting the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8293436@N04\/2441815236\/in\/set-72157604730397811\/\">O. Henry house<\/a> that I toured during the 2008 Nebulas.  <\/p>\n<p>It was a certain house of a certain era, and while it was a very nice house, it seemed as if it could have been any house.  (I felt differently when I toured homes belonging to Thomas Wolfe, Jack London, and Carl Sandburg.  Those writers seemed to be looking over my shoulders.)<\/p>\n<p>Oddly, the thing I enjoyed most about the visit was a framed letter I discovered in a small room being used as an office.
