{"id":17975,"date":"2015-01-18T23:22:51","date_gmt":"2015-01-19T04:22:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=17975"},"modified":"2015-01-18T23:22:51","modified_gmt":"2015-01-19T04:22:51","slug":"win-the-cold-war-with-the-power-of-prayer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2015\/01\/18\/win-the-cold-war-with-the-power-of-prayer\/","title":{"rendered":"Win the Cold War with the power of prayer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not sure why the editors at Charlton felt a need to publish a  comic attacking those godless communists on the other side of the Iron Curtain in  <a href=\"http:\/\/comicbookplus.com\/?dlid=56670&#038;b=i\"><em>Love Diary<\/em> #23<\/a> (September 1962), surrounded by the standard romance stories you&#8217;d expect to find in such a title,  but for some reason, that&#8217;s exactly what they did.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;God is Never Out of Style,&#8221; drawn by Rocke Mastroserio  and written by (your guess is as good as mine), instead of being  about a woman&#8217;s search for true love, is rather a stern warning not to &#8220;scoff at the beliefs of our forefathers&#8221; and certainly never &#8220;be tempted at times to put your religion second.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/LoveDiary23.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/LoveDiary23-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"LoveDiary23\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17988\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/LoveDiary23-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/LoveDiary23-680x1024.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/LoveDiary23.jpg 915w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A check of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comics.org\/story\/name\/God%20Is%20Never%20Out%20of%20Style\/sort\/alpha\/\">Grand Comics Database<\/a> shows that this incongruous one-pager ran eight times,  first in <em>Teen-Age Love<\/em> #27 (August 1962) and last in <em>I Love You<\/em> #44 (February 1963).<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line&#8212;go to the beach instead of church<\/em> and it&#8217;ll be <em>your<\/em> fault if we lose the Cold War!<\/p>\n<p>I have no idea what teens thought about the story 50+ years ago, but since we won  (we did, didn&#8217;t we?), I take it they took its message to heart.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not sure why the editors at Charlton felt a need to publish a comic attacking those godless communists on the other side of the Iron Curtain in Love Diary #23 (September 1962), surrounded by the standard romance stories you&#8217;d expect to find in such a title, but for some reason, that&#8217;s exactly what they did.
