E. van Vogt, Gardner F. Fox, and A. Bertram Chandler was intriguing, what interested me most was the back cover ad.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most <em>Bald People Could Have Saved Their<\/em> Hair Had They <em>Acted<\/em> in Time,&#8221; we&#8217;re told, with random italicization that doesn&#8217;t seem to make any sense. But what&#8217;s fascinating is the identity of the celebrity endorser doing the telling&#8212;&#8221;Rocco, Personal Barber of the late Thomas A. Edison.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/MarvelScienceStoriesNovember1950.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/MarvelScienceStoriesNovember1950-192x300.jpg\" alt=\"MarvelScienceStoriesNovember1950\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17906\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/MarvelScienceStoriesNovember1950-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/MarvelScienceStoriesNovember1950-655x1024.jpg 655w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/MarvelScienceStoriesNovember1950.jpg 1902w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s right&#8212;the barber to the inventor  known as the Wizard of Menlo Park claimed that a formula called Sayve is &#8220;the best Science can do to <strong>SAVE YOUR HAIR<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One question, though.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>If the product being touted does such a good job of saving hair, and if Rocco was Edison&#8217;s personal barber &#8230; then why did Edison look like <em>this<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ThomasEdison.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ThomasEdison-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"ThomasEdison\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17909\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ThomasEdison-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ThomasEdison-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ThomasEdison.jpg 1336w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Edison&#8217;s noggin doesn&#8217;t leave me with much confidence in either Sayve as a hair-restorer or Rocco as a barber!<\/p>\n<p>How did the adman&#8212;who in the face of that face decided Rocco and his Edison connection made for good copy&#8212;miss that?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was flipping through the November 1950 issue of Marvel Science Stories this afternoon (as one does on a lazy Saturday), and while the content by the likes of A.
