{"id":17233,"date":"2009-07-07T08:00:46","date_gmt":"2009-07-07T12:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=17233"},"modified":"2014-12-29T16:56:34","modified_gmt":"2014-12-29T21:56:34","slug":"captain-america-goes-to-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2009\/07\/07\/captain-america-goes-to-iran\/","title":{"rendered":"Captain America goes to Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over at the wonderful &#8217;80s comics site <a href=\"http:\/\/blindedmewithcomics.blogspot.com\/\"><i>Blinded Me With Comics<\/i><\/a>&#8212;which is a companion site to the great &#8217;70s comics site <a href=\"http:\/\/diversionsofthegroovykind.blogspot.com\/\"><i>Diversion of the Groovy Kind<\/i><\/a>&#8212;a recent post highlighted <a href=\"http:\/\/blindedmewithcomics.blogspot.com\/2009\/07\/80s-essentials-captain-america-250.html\">Captain&#8217;s America&#8217;s run for the presidency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/CaptainAmerica250.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/CaptainAmerica250-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"CaptainAmerica250\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/CaptainAmerica250-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/CaptainAmerica250.jpg 261w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This all took place back in a 1980 story arc by writer Roger Stern and artist John Byrne, though the post also reprinted the letters page from <i>Captain America<\/i> #250 in order to give credit to the two guys who first suggested  that concept&#8212;Roger McKenzie and Don Perlin.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But what I found far more interesting than any back story was how that page also revealed the changing times. Roger Stern printed the results of a survey he&#8217;d run several issues earlier in which he asked readers to write in and answer the question, &#8220;What do you think are the major problems facing Cap and\/or America in the 1980s?&#8221; (The poll also asked fans whether they wanted to see the secret of Cap&#8217;s shield revealed&#8212;and 65.9% said no.)<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting to see what they readers felt 29 years ago as they looked around at the world of 1980.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what they had to say were America&#8217;s most pressing problems (and you can find the complete page <a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_qZK742rc1hc\/SkzHGgGfU8I\/AAAAAAAAMLo\/G2tXZ7DWE8Q\/s1600-h\/CaptainAmerica250p13a.jpg\">here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Iranian Situation:          20.8%<br \/>\nPossibilities of limited or world war:  11.7%<br \/>\nEnergy Crisis:    10.4%<br \/>\nSoviet expansionism:   9.0%<br \/>\nThe economy:   9.0%<br \/>\nSocio-political cynicism:     7.8%<br \/>\nTerrorism:     3.9%<br \/>\nOther:    27.4%<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;d agree that both terrorism and the economy would rank higher on the list today than they did three decades ago.
