And  I wondered&#8212;would I be as pleased with its ending as I was with the slut-shaming smackdown from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2014\/12\/03\/how-slut-shaming-went-down-and-was-smacked-down-in-a-1954-romance-comic\/\">that 1954 issue of <em>Dream Book of Romance<\/em><\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>By which I mean &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove1-300x274.jpg\" alt=\"TooFatForLove1\" width=\"300\" height=\"274\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16958\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove1-300x274.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove1.jpg 915w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; would Mona Cacchio, constantly ridiculed for her weight, be allowed by the storytellers to find true love without having to conform to society&#8217;s pressures to achieve a supposedly ideal size? Or would they insist she become slim to be seen as deserving of a mate?<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see, shall we?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Mona is constantly mocked for her weight, by all save her parents and next-door neighbor Tony Cleaver, who tells her he likes her just the way she is. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove2-273x300.jpg\" alt=\"TooFatForLove2\" width=\"273\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16959\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove2-273x300.jpg 273w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove2.jpg 406w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She doesn&#8217;t believe him, though, thinking him a hypocrite. At least the others are truthful, she says, when they compare her to &#8220;an army tank&#8221; or &#8220;a tub of butter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But then along comes Gene Gibbs, who works in her father&#8217;s candy factory, and claims that he fell in love with her thanks to a photo he happened to see&#8212;and now he wants to marry her. (Wait&#8212;Mona&#8217;s father owns a candy factory? In a story with a theme like this, shouldn&#8217;t that be the kind of information we&#8217;re given when the story begins, rather than  on page four?)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove3-300x258.jpg\" alt=\"TooFatForLove3\" width=\"300\" height=\"258\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove3-300x258.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove3.jpg 497w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>She falls for Gene, though why she believes he doesn&#8217;t care about her size when she previously pushed Tony away&#8212;multiple times!&#8212;is never explained.<\/p>\n<p>So it appears that Mona would no longer be &#8220;a fat woman no man would ever love.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But wait&#8212;not so fast! One day, Mona shows up at the candy factory looking for her father &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove4-300x282.jpg\" alt=\"TooFatForLove4\" width=\"300\" height=\"282\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16962\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove4-300x282.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove4.jpg 461w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and overhears  that Dad is bribing Gene with half the company, or else &#8220;I won&#8217;t marry that fat daughter of yours!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove5-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"TooFatForLove5\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16963\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove5-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove5.jpg 299w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After learning this, Mary locks herself away, intending &#8220;to stay in my room forever!&#8221; Her parents are so worried after a week of her solitude and lack of desire for food that they break down her door. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove6-300x248.jpg\" alt=\"TooFatForLove6\" width=\"300\" height=\"248\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove6-300x248.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove6.jpg 453w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kindly old Doctor Rose declares her to be weak due to severe shock and malnutrition. While the examination is going on, Mona&#8217;s next-door neighbor Tony (remember him?) sneaks into the room and once more declares his love, saying, &#8220;I don&#8217;t care if you&#8217;re fat or skinny, short or tall. I&#8217;m in love with you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove7-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"TooFatForLove7\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16965\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove7-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove7.jpg 305w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This time, Mona believes him &#8230; though there&#8217;s no explanation why, especially not after she was just  betrayed by someone else who served up exactly the same platitudes.<\/p>\n<p>Mona agrees to marry Tony, who loved her just the way she was &#8230; only surprise, surprise, when she gets up from her sickbed, &#8220;I discovered that my fat had rolled away and I was slim!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove8-300x238.jpg\" alt=\"TooFatForLove8\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-16966\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove8-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/TooFatForLove8.jpg 539w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Really? <em>Really?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As you might guess,  I was less than pleased with the ending. Tony&#8217;s love may have been true, but that final panel has him a little too excited by the physical change sickness made to Mona. And the ending as a whole definitely  equated thinness with happiness, a mixed message indeed. <\/p>\n<p>Now if story had allowed Mona to find true love with Tony without the need for an illness-induced weight loss, <em>that<\/em> would have been an ending worth celebrating.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While I was reading the Winter 1950 issue of the romance comic Darling Love (as one does on a Sunday afternoon), I came across the 8-page story &#8220;Too Fat for Love,&#8221; written by May Richstone and drawn by Harry Lucey.
