{"id":16737,"date":"2008-12-19T20:31:59","date_gmt":"2008-12-20T01:31:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=16737"},"modified":"2014-12-10T18:00:25","modified_gmt":"2014-12-10T23:00:25","slug":"keep-on-churning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2008\/12\/19\/keep-on-churning\/","title":{"rendered":"Keep on churning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m way behind on reading my newspapers, so I&#8217;m only just now getting to the December 7th issue of the <i>Washington Post Book World<\/i>.   <\/p>\n<p>In an essay published as part of the regular feature &#8220;The Writing Life,&#8221; in which guest writers offer insight into their methods, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/story\/2008\/12\/05\/ST2008120501896.html\" target=\"_blank\">Roy Blount Jr. provides this advice<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>The only writing tip I can honestly offer, aside from &#8220;Do not shift your metaphors without making clear that you realize you are doing it,&#8221; is to quote something Wynonie Harris sung back in the &#8217;50s: &#8220;Keep on churning till the butter comes.&#8221;<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I like that metaphor.  I really do.
