They used to be where readers discovered they were not alone, and learned that their tribe was out there.  It&#8217;s where we debated what we loved, found friends, formed fan clubs, and sometimes (as with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dave_Cockrum\">Dave Cockrum and Andrea Kline<\/a>) even met spouses. <\/p>\n<p>But there was a time when Stan Lee, as the Marvel Universe was exploding, almost put the kibosh on all letter columns but one.<\/p>\n<p>I imagine it must have been tough to keep up when all those superhero titles were launching, each requiring its own letters column. His solution&#8212;drop them, add the freed pages to the stories themselves, and answer all Marvel mail in the <em>Fantastic Four<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>In <em>Spider-Man<\/em> #7 (cover-dated December 1963), he asked readers if they thought this  was a good idea.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan7LetterColumn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan7LetterColumn-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"SpiderMan7LetterColumn\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14603\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan7LetterColumn-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan7LetterColumn.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Spider-Man<\/em> #8 (January 1964) was way too early for Marvel to have received any letters, so Stan just asked for more feedback.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan8LetterColumn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan8LetterColumn-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"SpiderMan8LetterColumn\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan8LetterColumn-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan8LetterColumn.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Same for <em>Spider-Man<\/em> #9 (February 1964) &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan9LetterColumn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan9LetterColumn-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"SpiderMan9LetterColumn\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14606\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan9LetterColumn-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan9LetterColumn.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t until <em>Spider-Man<\/em> #10 (March 1964) that Stan announced &#8220;the overwhelming majority demanded&#8221; the status quo, and so letter columns continued in the full line of Marvel titles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan10LetterColumn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan10LetterColumn-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"SpiderMan10LetterColumn\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14635\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan10LetterColumn-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/SpiderMan10LetterColumn.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though this is something eight-year-old me would have read at the time, it&#8217;s a proposal I&#8217;d completely forgotten until my current <em>Spider-Man<\/em> reread. But as I consider Stan&#8217;s words now, I wonder&#8212;was he being serious? Was he really considering shoe-horning all fan mail into the pages of the <em>Fantastic Four<\/em>? Or was this just a way of getting readers to write in?
