Irene and I held our annual Thank God It’s Spring daffodil party a week ago Saturday, something we started doing after we moved to eight acres in West Virginia and began planting thousands of bulbs. I’ve had my brain in an as-yet-untitled new short story<\/a>, which is why I haven’t previously shared how it all went down, but I thought it safe now to take a break from revisions to share.<\/p>\n

\"Daffodils2014\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This year, 33 guest made the trek to our place to say farewell to Winter. The weather cooperated—the sun was out all day, and the temperature hovered in the upper 50s.<\/p>\n

The daffodils cooperated, too. We were in what I think of as the second wave of bloom.<\/p>\n

First come the tiny T\u00eate-\u00e0-T\u00eate daffodils, holding the stage alone for about a week. <\/p>\n

Then come a few all-white and all-yellow varieties.<\/p>\n

Outside, there was a lot of hiking around our acreage, while inside, there was plenty of eating, among other things, a brisket which I’d been cooking for 72 hours thanks to my Sansaire immersion circulator<\/a>.<\/p>\n

How good was it? Even though guests had been noshing on crudities, chips, dips, nuts, cheeses, crackers, cold cuts, salads and more for a few hours, when the brisket was brought to the table, it vanished. <\/p>\n

I’d thought that after all the earlier food, a six-pound brisket would be enough, but I was wrong.<\/p>\n

In addition to all the trekking and feasting, there was also entertainment (if you can call it that) in the form of ukuleles. <\/p>\n

Dave Bartell had brought his uke, and the two of us strummed for almost an hour, singing such songs as “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” “Yes, Sir, That’s My Baby,” “Political Science 101,” and “Charlie on the M.T.A.” (Which I realize makes for an eclectic set list.)<\/p>\n

We had so much fun, we’ll surely do it again next year. So if you know us, and we know you, save the first or second Saturday in April 2015. We’ll figure out later exactly which of the two days is best to dodge tax day and religious holidays.<\/p>\n
