I came across two different concepts this week which I think could easily be adapted—or should I say stolen—for science fiction, fantasy, and horror. <\/p>\n
The first was brought to mind by an article written by Archie Thomas on the Hollywood Black List—and no, it’s probably not the blacklist you thought of first—in the October 6-12 issue of the weekly Variety<\/i>:<\/p>\n Soho’s members clubs, coffee shops and pubs were abuzz last week as the second edition of the Brit List, which details the most respected unproduced movie scripts by non-American writers, was released and pinged from BlackBerry to BlackBerry, hitting Hollywood almost instantly.<\/p>\n The eagerly anticipated list, inspired by Hollywood’s Black List of best unproduced scripts, was voted on anonymously by more than 40 top-level figures in the U.K. and Irish film industries. Agents, producers, sales agents, distributors, studio execs and public funders provide up to 10 titles for voting on the privately circulated list. This year’s list features 46 scripts from 160 original choices, all chosen from scripts that were not shooting at the time of the list’s circulation.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n I wondered, when I first heard of the concept a couple of years ago, and sparked by the article, I wonder again now—would it be possible to survey our top editors and agents and, under the promise of anonymity, get them to spill the best novels that came across their desks which couldn’t get published in the past few years? <\/p>\n Would those people respond to such a plea? Is such a list possible? And if not, why not? Whether this is a workable idea or just a pipe dream, I know that I’d love to see it applied to us<\/i>.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, over in the October 17 issue of Entertainment Weekly<\/i>, the editors have asked Hollywood to revote the Oscars:<\/p>\n <\/i>EW has launched a massive Hollywood survey to discover which Oscar-winning achievements have stood the test of time. This week, 7,000 “Recall the Gold” ballots were mailed to elite members of the film industry inviting them to revote on everything from Best Actress in a Supporting Role to Best Picture in five separate years: 2003, 1998, 1993, 1988, and 1983.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n While World Science Fiction Conventions have in recent years handed out Retro Hugos for years in which Hugos were not originally given—such as when the 2004 con handed out Hugos for 1954—no one’s ever attempted to rewrite history. And perhaps no one ever should.<\/p>\n But how about that Black List idea?
