{"id":14193,"date":"2008-10-07T12:51:33","date_gmt":"2008-10-07T16:51:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=14193"},"modified":"2014-03-19T16:28:02","modified_gmt":"2014-03-19T20:28:02","slug":"happy-birthday-howard-chaykin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2008\/10\/07\/happy-birthday-howard-chaykin\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy birthday, Howard Chaykin!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You may have turned 58 today, and have gone all Hollywood, writing scripts for such TV shows as <i>Earth: Final Conflict<\/i>, <i>Mutant X<\/i>, and <i>Viper<\/i>, but once upon a time you were a comic-book newcomer.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 1972, when you were 21 and I was 17, we huddled in a corner near the elevators on the 18th floor of the Statler Hilton Hotel at one of Phil Seuling&#8217;s July 4th weekend comic-book conventions, and you drew this picture of your Iron-Wolf character in my sketchbook.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/HowardChaykinSketch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/HowardChaykinSketch-255x300.jpg\" alt=\"HowardChaykinSketch\" width=\"255\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/HowardChaykinSketch-255x300.jpg 255w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/HowardChaykinSketch.jpg 799w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well &#8230; at least I <i>think<\/i> it was 1972.  It might have been as early as Phil&#8217;s 1971 con or as late as the 1973 one.
