{"id":14120,"date":"2014-03-09T14:27:19","date_gmt":"2014-03-09T18:27:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=14120"},"modified":"2014-03-09T14:27:19","modified_gmt":"2014-03-09T18:27:19","slug":"happy-91st-birthday-paul-fung-jr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2014\/03\/09\/happy-91st-birthday-paul-fung-jr\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy 91st birthday, Paul Fung, Jr.!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The  only time I ever met <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Fung,_Jr.\">Paul Fung, Jr.<\/a>,  who was the artist on the <em>Blondie<\/em> comic book for 40 years, he was younger than I am now, and I was 17. <\/p>\n<p>I was attending the 1973 Reuben Awards banquet thanks to friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2014\/01\/22\/bill-kresse-1933-2013\/\">Bill Kresse<\/a>, and clueless teen comics fan that I was, I wandered the ballroom at the Waldorf Astoria with a pad and magic markers and asked the artists there&#8212;who were far more interested in eating, drinking, dancing, and schmoozing with their friends&#8212;for  sketches.<\/p>\n<p>Which is how I ended up with drawings of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2012\/02\/19\/happy-birthday-curt-swan\/\">Superman by Curt Swan<\/a>, Beetle Bailey by Mort Walker, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2008\/07\/21\/happy-birthday-garry-trudeau\/\">Zonker Harris by Garry Trudeau<\/a>, and many others &#8230; including this one from Fung.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/BlondiePaulFungJrSketch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/BlondiePaulFungJrSketch-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"BlondiePaulFungJrSketch\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14121\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/BlondiePaulFungJrSketch-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/BlondiePaulFungJrSketch-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/BlondiePaulFungJrSketch-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s wishing  Paul Fung, Jr., who took the time to be  nice to a teen noodge long ago and far away,  a happy 91st birthday.
