{"id":13589,"date":"2014-02-20T11:27:54","date_gmt":"2014-02-20T16:27:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=13589"},"modified":"2014-02-20T11:27:54","modified_gmt":"2014-02-20T16:27:54","slug":"which-side-are-you-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2014\/02\/20\/which-side-are-you-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Which side are you on?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Something unexpected popped into my head while reading some recent <a href=\"http:\/\/nkjemisin.com\/2014\/02\/pretty-much-the-only-comment-ill-make-here-on-the-current-sfwa-shenanigans\/\"> eloquent <\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/arinndembo.com\/sfwa-and-the-wisdom-of-solomon\/\">commentary<\/a> on SFWA&#8217;s current culture war. (To which I won&#8217;t be adding an essay of my own, because  others have been expressing what&#8217;s in my heart and on my mind much better than I ever could, so I&#8217;ll just say that I&#8217;m all set to enlist in <a href=\"http:\/\/whatever.scalzi.com\/2014\/02\/18\/join-the-insect-army\/\">John<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maryrobinettekowal.com\/journal\/join-john-marys-insect-army\/\">Mary<\/a>&#8216;s Insect Army and leave it at that.)<\/p>\n<p>The memory that showed up to surprise me was of this artifact from one of the most divisive moments in science fiction history, this ad&#8212;two ads really&#8212;from the June 1968 issue of <em>Galaxy Science Fiction<\/em>. (I&#8217;ve smirched the image from <a href=\"http:\/\/sffbooksonmars.blogspot.com\/2011\/09\/1968-issue-of-galaxy-reveals-where-more.html\">Marooned<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/SFWAVietNam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/SFWAVietNam-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"SFWAVietNam\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-13590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/SFWAVietNam-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/SFWAVietNam-1024x741.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/SFWAVietNam.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the ad, opposing camps of SF writers  either &#8220;believe the United States must remain in Vietnam to fulfill its responsibilities to the people of that country&#8221; or &#8220;oppose the participation of the United States in the War in Vietnam.&#8221; Yes, I was only 13 when these ads was published, a fan not yet a pro privy to the inner workings of the field, and no, this was not officially related to  SFWA, but rather <a href=\"http:\/\/www.depauw.edu\/sfs\/pioneers\/franklin52.htm\">a  project generated by Kate Wilhelm and Judith Merril<\/a> that only coincidentally overlapped with the names of many SFWA members, but still, the contentiousness created by the public choosing of sides seems familiar.<\/p>\n<p>And even though it was painful at the time for the participants to live through, you&#8217;ll forgive me if I say that from this distance, colored by time and perhaps my naivet\u00e9, these two lists of names and the statements to which they&#8217;re appended seem quaint and reserved, especially when compared to the incendiary language of Dave Truesdale&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/radishreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Bulletin-petition3.pdf\">recent petition<\/a> (to which, interestingly, a few of the same writers have appended their names). <\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think any of us will look back with nostalgia  46 years from now at the current culture war the way I do now for 1968&#8217;s. But maybe, by then, if we work really, really hard, and we&#8217;re really, really lucky, we won&#8217;t still be fighting this one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Something unexpected popped into my head while reading some recent eloquent commentary on SFWA&#8217;s current culture war.
