{"id":13320,"date":"2008-09-30T09:23:43","date_gmt":"2008-09-30T13:23:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=13320"},"modified":"2014-01-23T16:18:19","modified_gmt":"2014-01-23T21:18:19","slug":"boulevard-of-broken-dreams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2008\/09\/30\/boulevard-of-broken-dreams\/","title":{"rendered":"Boulevard of Broken Dreams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I dropped by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moccany.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art<\/a> on lower Broadway in New York last week.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ScottEdelmanMoCCA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ScottEdelmanMoCCA-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"ScottEdelmanMoCCA\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-13321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ScottEdelmanMoCCA-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ScottEdelmanMoCCA.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d always intended to visit the museum, but since I&#8217;m only in Manhattan infrequently, and usually dashing around madly, I&#8217;ve never previously gotten around to it.  What finally motivated me to make it there was the current  retrospective on the career of underground comix cartoonist Kim Deitch.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I attended my first comic-book convention in 1970 at age 15, which is also when I first found underground comix, but I discovered Deitch&#8217;s art even earlier than that.  <\/p>\n<p>Serendipitously, while walking the streets of Canarsie, where I lived from 1966-1972, I found a copy of the underground newspaper  <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Village_Other\" target=\"_blank\"><i>The East Village Other<\/i><\/a>, which someone had abandoned on the street.  It contained   Deitch&#8217;s cartoons, as well as the work of other cartoonists such as Art Speigelman and Spain Rodriguez.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/8293436@N04\/sets\/72157607573628830\/\" target=\"_blank\">You can find photos from my visit here.<\/a>  If some of them seem a little dark, that&#8217;s because flash photography wasn&#8217;t allowed, but I think the art pictured there can still be enjoyed.<\/p>\n<p>For those unfamiliar with this creator, here&#8217;s  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fantasticmetropolis.com\/i\/deitch\/\" target=\"_blank\">an interview with  Kim Deitch<\/a>, which I came across while wandering about online.
