{"id":13116,"date":"2008-07-30T23:19:14","date_gmt":"2008-07-31T03:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=13116"},"modified":"2014-01-18T13:37:05","modified_gmt":"2014-01-18T18:37:05","slug":"literary-redlining","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2008\/07\/30\/literary-redlining\/","title":{"rendered":"Literary redlining"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an article about George Pelecanos in last week&#8217;s issue of <i>The Washington Post Magazine<\/i>, timed to coincide with the publication of his 15th novel, <i>The Turnaround<\/i>, several other writers who happen to be fans of his work are mentioned in order to show how popular he is, and how his books cross boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>The first such writer mentioned is &#8220;distinguished novelist Jonathan Lethem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/LethamJuly2008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/LethamJuly2008.jpg\" alt=\"LethamJuly2008\" width=\"270\" height=\"270\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/LethamJuly2008.jpg 270w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/LethamJuly2008-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second is &#8220;horror titan Stephen King.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Am I the only one who&#8217;s irritated by these contrasting descriptions?  I guess it&#8217;s further proof, if we needed any, that Jonathan has broken out of the ghetto (a hot topic of discussion at the recent Readercon), but &#8230; isn&#8217;t King <i>also<\/i> a distinguished novelist?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps I shouldn&#8217;t be annoyed by this.
