I leapt from the Jeep, and before I moved it off the asphalt into the low grass&#151;which I hope ended up being  the side of the road toward which it was heading, otherwise I&#8217;d just set him back several hours&#151;I snapped this picture.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Another2008turtle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Another2008turtle-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Another2008turtle\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12961\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Another2008turtle-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Another2008turtle.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While I was kneeling there, someone else came barreling along, and if they had been less cognizant (or caring) than I, the poor thing could have gone <i>splat<\/i> had I not been there blocking part of the road.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you who have been following my recent wildlife encounters, this was <i>not<\/i> the same <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/2008\/06\/12\/scott-and-toad-are-friends\/\" target=\"_blank\">turtle we spotted earlier this month<\/a>.  This one was a couple of inches larger, around eight inches, which is supposed to be the maximum size for an Eastern Box Turtle.<\/p>\n<p>Based on its shell shape and eye color, I <i>think<\/i> this is a female&#151;but I&#8217;m sure that <lj user=\"txtriffidranch\"> will be along soon to set us all straight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I left the house this morning at 9:00 a.m., I found this turtle around 100 yards down the road trying to get from one side to the other.
