{"id":12849,"date":"2008-05-13T22:23:01","date_gmt":"2008-05-14T02:23:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/?p=12849"},"modified":"2014-01-15T09:39:12","modified_gmt":"2014-01-15T14:39:12","slug":"newly-discovered-zelazny-novel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/2008\/05\/13\/newly-discovered-zelazny-novel\/","title":{"rendered":"Newly discovered Zelazny Novel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediabistro.com\/galleycat\/new_upcoming\/the_scifi_masters_longlost_pulp_thriller_84664.asp\" target=\"_blank\"><i>GalleyCat<\/i><\/a>, I just learned that Charles Ardai&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hardcasecrime.com\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Hard Case Crime<\/a> line will be publishing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hardcasecrime.com\/books_bios.cgi?title=The%20Dead%20Man&#39;s%20Brother\" target=\"_blank\"><i>The Dead Man&#8217;s Brother<\/i>, a previously unpublished novel by Roger Zelazny<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>The manuscript, supposedly completed 30 years ago and long thought lost, was apparently recently discovered among Zelazny&#8217;s papers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DeadMansBrotherZelazny.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DeadMansBrotherZelazny-186x300.jpg\" alt=\"DeadMansBrotherZelazny\" width=\"186\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12850\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DeadMansBrotherZelazny-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DeadMansBrotherZelazny.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Roger Zelazny was once one of my gods.  I loved  &#8220;A Rose for Ecclesiastes,&#8221; <i>Creatures of Light and Darkness<\/i>, <i>Lord of Light<\/i>, <i>Nine Princes in Amber<\/i> (the sequels, not so much),  &#8220;The Doors of His Face, The Lamps of His Mouth,&#8221; and many other of his short stories and novels, so a new work, particularly one from when he was still in his prime, is big news for me.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m also looking forward to learning the entire history of the manuscript&#8217;s submissions and rejections, and why it ended up in a desk drawer for decades  instead of being read by all of us in the &#8217;70s. <\/p>\n<p>The stories behind Phil K. Dick&#8217;s struggles to get his mainstream novels published were fascinating, so  I&#8217;m hoping that the entire story behind this particular story will also end up being revealed.<\/p>\n<p>Though <i>GalleyCat<\/i> didn&#8217;t provide a link to it, the publisher&#8217;s site is offering  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hardcasecrime.com\/books_bios.cgi?entry=bk52&amp;type=excerpt\" target=\"_blank\">an excerpt<\/a>.
