Ehrlich popularized esoteric etymological knowledge, writing forty dictionaries, thesauruses, and phrase books, including <i>The Highly Selective Thesaurus for the Extraordinarily Literate<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/EugeneEhrlich.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scottedelman.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/EugeneEhrlich.jpg\" alt=\"EugeneEhrlich\" width=\"190\" height=\"280\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12771\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But what impressed me the most was that his obituary (and he) ended this way:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Some family members were so used to Mr. Ehrlich&#8217;s habit of correcting grammar that some studied up before visiting him. On his deathbed, Mr. Ehrlich heard somebody ask, \u201cTo who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom,\u201d he said, with a weak voice and great authority.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Way to go!  <\/p>\n<p>(So to speak.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times reports today on the death of Eugene Ehrlich at age 85.
